In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge form and conventions of

real media products?

• We challenged the codes and conventions of hip hop by using female actresses to lip sync male voices as within our research we had not seen this done before. We also agreed that this would add to the fun element of the final media product.

• We included a ‘white nerdy’ archetypal character to add to the feel good and fun element of our final media product to look out of place in a tasteful way. This developed the archetypal character used within the hip hop genre as the majority of time most males within the genre are seen are macho and ‘street’.

• We adhered to the codes and conventions of hip hop when it came to mis-en-scene. We used two different graffiti scenes used a white old car which looked like it was from the 80’s . In terms of clothing all members were dressed in shell suits, hats, big glasses and trainers all of which we decided to use when we saw these themes reoccurring within our research in both our textual and semiotic analysis’

• In terms of editing to the beat and camerawork we tried to keep to the codes and conventions of old school hip hop as much as possible. We drew inspiration from a tribe called quest and Run DMC’s videos which we analysed within our textual analysis keeping to the fast pace editing of dancing and movement which was evident throughout their music videos. We also drew inspiration from other genres such as the carnival genre . We drew inspiration from a Bonde Do Role video where the use of children emphasises a fun warm atmosphere within the video as opposed to a more ‘street’ as we were aiming for a more mainstream family friendly hip hop video

• Over all we tried to use funky vibrant colours in the scenes and attire throughout the music video. We could not include many urban settings such as the majority of the hip hop videos we analysed due to being in a sub urban area and difficulties of lighting an outdoor area. Instead we used the car green screen shots and graffiti scenes to make up for the lack of urban shots to keep to the conventions of a hip hop video.
