“We need to find a way we can move this manure, a way to turn it into a product that somebody wants and not break the bank doing it. If we don’t, we’re eventually going to break the soil bank.”

Compromised Beauty

High fecal coliform bacteria counts, well above the standard for Class B streams (200 colonies per 100 milliliters of water) are consistently found downstream of Granger in the vicinity of both irrigation return ditches and large dairy operations.

“DNA gets the poop on manure contamination”Mike Lee Tri City Herald 6/25/02

• 31% of the DNA sampled was linked to cows

• Cows still are believed to be the single largest source of E.coli

• 2001 concentration of the bacteria were about seven times greater than state water quality standards allow

• The application of manure to fields is probably the prime source now of fecal coliform
