IMPORWARE EGYPT - WP2 Activities

Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA)

Established according to the Law 4/1994 (later amended by Law 9/1999) for protection of the environment. The principal functions of the Agency include formulating environmental policies, preparing environmental protection and environmental development projects, undertaking pilot projects and promoting environmental relations between Egypt and other countries.

IMPROWARE PROJECT – Technical Workshop, April 2014, Tunis SWIM

Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA)

In 2003 a memorandum of understanding on environmental protection cooperation was signed between EEAA and IMELS to jointly work in the sectors of sustainable development, water management, eco-tourism, renewable energy and capacity building on environmental data and indicators . Since then, the two partners co-operated successfully in a number of projects.

Project Site (New Nobaryia City)

Recharge Site on the desert fringe 20 km west of the WWTP site.

Objectives:

• To acquire all available data on existing WWTP;

• To acquire and homogenize all available information on subsurface aquifer systems at the targeted sites;

• To acquire and homogenize all available information on evolution of groundwater use, pumping rates, piezometric level and water quality.

IMPROWARE PROJECT – Technical Workshop, April 2014, Tunis SWIM

Tasks:This WP aims to provide a detailed and comprehensive investigation on the present setting of the targeted sites, focusing principally on the following aspects:• Investigation on agricultural practices, needs, and constraints;• Investigation on groundwater use and availability;• Investigation on the WWTP in the present condition;• Collection of hydrogeological information on the aquifer geometry and soil

properties;• Investigation on the location of pumping wells and evolution of the

withdrawal rates;• Investigation on time and areal evolution of the saltwater intrusion in the

coastal aquifer;• The gathered data will be homogenized, processed, and inserted into the

GIS of the project.

IMPROWARE PROJECT – Technical Workshop, April 2014, Tunis SWIM

Site Investigation Programme Includes:

– Site Visits

– Collection of climate data

– Drilling of a ±50m well (Continuous Core Drilling)

– Drilling of 5 Piezometers ±30m deep

– Hydraulic Conductivity Tests (pumping/slug tests)

– Soil Infiltration Tests

– Soil and Groundwater Sampling and Analysis.

IMPROWARE PROJECT – Technical Workshop, April 2014, Tunis SWIM

Site Visits:

• Lake receives raw wastewater.

• Field-measured EC ranged up to 4000 ppm in some parts.

IMPROWARE PROJECT – Technical Workshop, April 2014, Tunis SWIM

Infiltration Test LocationsIMPROWARE PROJECT – Technical Workshop, April 2014, Tunis SWIM

Deliverables:

• Report on the state of the targeted sites;• GIS database combining existing data and

IMPROWARE results.

IMPROWARE PROJECT – Technical Workshop, April 2014, Tunis SWIM

EEAA Achievements on WP2:

• All data of the current state of the WWTP were collected• Contracting an expert for collecting the site-specific data

needed• Preparing and reviewing the tender of the well and

piezometers installation.• Translating the TOR.• Translating the drilling documents.• Assisting CURSA in data collection.• Collaboration with RIGW on the data collection.• Coordination with the national stakeholders.• Completion of the infiltration tests.

IMPROWARE PROJECT – Technical Workshop, April 2014, Tunis SWIM

Drilling tender – Already Prepared and Published (deadline was

25/3/2014)– Currently in the process of Contacting the drilling

contractors.

WP3 Hydrological setting in the selected areas

IMPROWARE PROJECT – Technical Workshop, April 2014, Tunis SWIM

Objectives:

• To produce a high-density high-resolution 3D Hydrogeological model of the area of the site, based upon multi-parametric inversion of data from different geophysical techniques and other sources;

• To identify the extent of saline water intrusion;• To identify areas potentially suitable for managed aquifer

recharge;• To establish a monitoring network of groundwater levels

and quality;• To set up and calibrate the 3D numerical model of aquifer

system at the demonstration site.

IMPROWARE PROJECT – Technical Workshop, April 2014, Tunis SWIM

Tasks:• The characterization of the coastal aquifer was

reached through dedicated geophysical measurements, integrated with ancillary information, to derive maps of hydrogeological interest.

IMPROWARE PROJECT – Technical Workshop, April 2014, Tunis SWIM

state-of-the-art geophysical techniques were applied namely:

• Ground electromagnetics (Walk-TEM) for both near surface and deeper penetration

• Report in January 2014

• Magnetic Resonance Sounding (MRS)

• Report in February 2014

IMPROWARE PROJECT – Technical Workshop, April 2014, Tunis SWIM

Deliverables:

• Geophysics reports documenting data analysis and interpretation;

• 3D characterization of the aquifer’s geometry, and mapping of the salinity distribution.

• (based on the above) groundwater flow models of the demonstration site.

IMPROWARE PROJECT – Technical Workshop, April 2014, Tunis SWIM

EEAA Achievements in WP3:• Finalize the shipments process and

authorization of the equipment• Technical Assistance to the Danish experts

(AAR) on the surveys • Logistical Assistance for AAR Experts• Collaboration with RIGW engineers on the

surveys
