looking for a trading partner in the Pacific. Hawaiian sugar was cheaper than sugar from the West Indies. Americans moved in and bought up much of the land and hired Japanese laborers. Eventually Americans vote to overthrow the Native Queen.

American missionaries arrived in the 1820s and by the 1870s, Americans controlled most of the land and trade.

In 1875, Hawaiian sugar was exempted from U.S. tariffs, but in 1876, the U.S. demanded Pearl Harbor in exchange for tax-free status.

In 1887, King Kalakaua was forced to sign the Bayonet Constitution.

In 1893, supporters of annexation overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy and proclaimed Hawaii a U.S. protectorate.

U.S. annexed Hawaii in 1898.

Kalakaua died during a visit to San Francisco in 1891 and was succeeded by his sister, Liliuokalani, the last Hawaiian monarch. Two years later, after further political wrangling, she was deposed in an American-led revolution that produced a provisional government under the leadership of Sanford B. Dole. The new regime immediately requested annexation by the US, but the treaty providing for it bogged down in the Senate, and died after the inauguration of President Grover Cleveland, an opponent of expansionism. The provisional government then drafted a new constitution and on 4 July 1894 proclaimed the Republic of Hawaii, with Dole as president. The Spanish-American War, which fanned expansionist feelings in the US and pointed up the nation's strategic interests in the Pacific, gave proponents of annexation the opportunity they had been seeking. The formal transfer of sovereignty took place on 12 August 1898, and Dole became Hawaii's first territorial governor when the act authorizing the annexation became effective in June 1900.

borrowing money from European ones and then not paying them back. They knew that the U.S. would not allow European armies in the western hemisphere.

Banana Republics was the nickname given to so many of these countries that would change leadership and governments defaulting on the loans.

Dollar Diplomacy America worked to replace European loans with American

ones like in 1909 in Honduras to fend off British bondholders. The same thing happened in Nicaragua and Haiti.

In return the U.S. would take control of each of the countries National Banks –thus Dollar Diplomacy. Now American business interests could be promoted in these places
