Intercultural Dialogue - Highlights

Intercultural Dialogue was the theme of the IAU 2009 International Conference, held in partnership with Notre

Dame University – Louaize, Lebanon

The Role of Higher Education in Fostering Intercultural Dialogue and Understanding

IAU collaborated on a number of projects with the Council of Europe (CoE)

- Participated in the CoE conference on: Universities as Actors of Intercultural Dialogue in the Wider Society.

- IAU and CoE jointly edited the publication Speaking Across Borders: The Role of Higher Education in Furthering Intercultural Dialogue – Volume 16 of the CoE Higher Education Series

LEADHER Programme – Highlights

- Between 2008 – 2012 : 30 LEADHER Projects, involving 52 different IAU Member Institutions, in 35 Countries

- Each project involving at least one institution from a low income country.

- Grant raised from €7,000 Euros to €10,000

- € 186 545.00 allocated to IAU Members

- Special project responding to needs of Haitian HE community – in 2010 and 2011. 4 projects undertaken for a total of €40,000

- 2012 competition – Strengthening Research Capacity and Research Management

Project I (2008 – 2011) - Information Kit published: Why and How Can Higher Education Contribute to All Levels and Types of Education?

- IAU Higher Education and EFA Portal (HEEFA Portal) developed. Also HEEFA Newsletter initiated with readership of 800+

- Capacity building project developed: Envisioning a Global Initiative Locally. Piloted in meetings in Mexico and Burkina

Faso.

Project II (2011 – 2015)

Includes actions on following themes:

- Community Building: Renewal of Reference Group and improvement of HEEFA Portal

- Capacity Building: based on pilot sessions, a new workshop model developed

- Commitment building:

> Follow up of workshop outcomes

> Charter of HE commitment to EFA: to serve as a model to guide HE actions

> Advocacy: For official recognition of HE and Research in declarations and processes (e.g. Jomtien Declaration 2011). IAU participation at the 10th Meeting of High-Level Group on EFA.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES

- Institutional surveys on doctoral education in 6 HEIs in Francophone and Anglophone countries in initial phase; 4 additional surveys subsequently

- Institutional site visits

- Comparative analysis of challenges and opportunities

- 4 workshops: 2 in Nigeria (2010), 1 in Cameroon (2011); 1 in Ethiopia (2012)

- Reports: Phase 1 Project Report (2011); Outcomes Report Addis Ababa Seminar, (2012) – published online and presented at IAU 14th General Conference

- IAU-ACUP Portal on Doctoral Education: www.IDEA-PhD.net , launched at 14th General Conference

- 2 LEADHER grants per year available for projects linked to Doctoral programmes

- Wide dissemination – project outcomes presented at meetings of COREVIP, SARUA, EAIE, EUA among others
