Chapter 1 Product Overview
The device is designed and manufactured mainly for AC voltage withstand test of
main electrical equipment, such as 10kV and 35kV cable, electric generator and main
transformer of 220kV and below. Electric reactor is designed separately with multiple
sections, and the various combinations of series/parallel connections could increase
or decrease voltage, electric current, frequency, power, and so on. For example, series
connection could boost voltage and frequency, and parallel connection could increase
electric current and reduce frequency. The device is applied widely to high-voltage
testing departments of city and county, and is the ideal withstand voltage equipment
for companies engaged in power installation and maintenance.
The device is mainly consisted of variable-frequency power source, Excitation
transformer, electric reactor, capacitive voltage divider, and so on.
Advantages of series resonance applied to electric system
1.Greatly reduce the power capacity needed. Series resonance power makes use
of the high voltage and strong current generated by the resonance between resonance
reactor and capacitance of the object. In the entire system, power only supplies the

parts of power consumption. Therefore, the power needed in test is only 1/Q of the
capacity of test.
2.Greatly reduce the weight and volume of equipment. With series resonance
power, the heavy high-power voltage-regulating unit and high-power
working-frequency testing transformer will be no longer used. Furthermore,
resonance excitation power is only 1/Q of test capacity, so the weight and volume of
system could be reduced greatly, generally 1/10-1/30 of common testing equipment.
3.Improve waveform of output voltage. Resonance power is of resonant filter
circuit, which could improve wave distortion of output voltage and produce better
sine wave, thus effectively preventing accidental breakdown to the object tested
caused by peak of harmonic wave.
4.Prevent heavy short-circuit current from burning fault point. In the state of
series resonance, if insulation imperfection of the object to be tested is broken down,
the circuit will lose resonance immediately and the loop current will drop rapidly to
1/Q of normal test current. Compared to withstand voltage test adopting parallel
resonance or testing transformer, in which breakdown current will rise several tens of
times immediately in the abovementioned case, short-circuit current is different with
breakdown current hundreds of times. Therefore, with series resonance, insulation
imperfection could be found out easily, and at the same time, you’ll not worry about
short-circuit current burning the fault point.
5.No appearance of any restoring overvoltage. In case of breakdown of test
object, due to lose of resonance conditions, high voltage will disappear immediately,
electric arc will also extinguish at once, and it will take very long time to restore
voltage, so it’s easy to cut off power before up to flashover voltage next time. The

process of voltage restoration is an interrupted oscillation process of energy
accumulation, which will take very long time, and there’ll be no case of restoring
overvoltage.
Main functions and technical features of frequency modulation resonance
device of our company:
1.The device have the protection functions such as overvoltage, overcurrent,
zero position starts up, system detuning (flashover), and so on. The value of
overvoltage and overcurrent protection could be set according to user’s demands,
when the test object occurs flashover, the flashover protection will act and also the
value of voltage, current, etc. will be recorded at the time of flashover, which
provides convenience for test analysis.
2.The single piece of entire device is of light weight, not more than 40kg (except
large capacity equipment), which provides convenience for field use.
3.The device has three operating modes and users could choose one according to
the site conditions, thus improving the time consumption of test.
Operating modes: full-automatic, manual, automatic tuning and manual
boosting
4.Memory function, with which the data is stored in figures, is convenient for
users to identify and lookup.
5.When the device conducts frequency sweeping automatically, the starting
point could be set at random within the specified range; the direction of sweeping
could be upward or downward, and it is convenient for user to know if resonance
point is found or not.
6.Sweep frequency at high speed; automatically identify exciting transformers of

7.Adopt DSP platform technology, it is convenient for user to add or reduce
functions and upgrading according to the demands; also make the human-machine
exchange interface more humanized.

4.1. General information
4.1.1. Power
Directly connect single phase 220V or three phase 380V with“Input” of
variable-frequency power source; connect with red A and yellow C when the
power is 220V and connect with red A, green B and yellow C when the power
is 380V.

“Quit” after fill in a new parameter, and press “Confirm” to test. At the beginning of
entering into the system, sweep frequency firstly, and then automatically boost the
voltage to the set value after finding the resonance point. On reaching to the set
voltage value, count down, and reduce voltage automatically when timing is finished.
The interface is then switched to test results, and the test is finished.

Frequency adjustment: Press up or down arrow keys to select for confirmation,
output frequency adjustment. Coarse adjustment by up or down arrow keys, and fine
adjustment by left or right arrow keys. (2Hz by up or down arrow keys, and 0.1Hz by
left or right arrow keys)
Timing: When output voltage reaches the set value, start “count down” and lock
boosting key. Reduce voltage automatically when counting down is finished. The
interface is then switched to test results, and the test is finished.

abnormal failure during test.
If this interface appears during test, please check the test object carefully (It is
suggested to conduct insulation and DC withstand voltage test by insulation

Chapter VI Trouble Shooting
General cautions
1.The device shall be operated by specialized person of high voltage test, and
please read the operation manual carefully and practice repeatedly before use.
2.No less than two persons shall be needed for operation. During operation,
please strictly follow the safe operation rules about high voltage test formulated by
our company.
3.To ensure the safe and correct test, please strictly follow relevant national
standards and regulations for test operation, besides of the product manual.
4.The wires shall not be connected wrong, or else the test device may be
damaged.
5.When operating the device, high voltage or ultra-high voltage is output, so

should be reliably grounded. Pay attention to operational safety.
6.2Common fault causes and trouble shooting
1.Fan can’t be started
( 1) After emergency stop, fault protection or detuning protection,
“Fault resetting” has not been pressed down;
( 2 ) Excess temperature inside, and thermal protection of power
component has acted;
Faults removing method: Cut off power supply, leave the device for about 30
minutes and switch on the power again, press “Resetting” on instrument panel and
start the device again.
If the fan could not be started, please contact the manufacturer, and do not
disassemble the device!
Automatic tuning is impossible and resonance point could not be found:
Phenomenon:
After tuning, the device gives the prompt of not finding resonance point.
Cause:
Not reliable circuit loop grounding, wrong circuit loop wiring, emergency stop
key not been reset (light on), open circuit of an instrument
排除方法:
Faults removing method:
1) Check whether the earth device is reliable, if there’s any cut-off point?
2) Check on-off of the high-voltage and low-voltage coil of excitation
transformer;

3) Check each of the electric reactors;
4) Check signal line of the voltage divider;
5) Check the high and low-voltage capacity side of voltage divider;
6) If there’s no resonance point when the device increase voltage
automatically, also need to check the compensating capacitor.
If all the parts are normal, while not any resonance point is found, please
contact the manufacturer, and do not disassemble the device!
3 Voltage could not be increased to the test voltage
现象:
Phenomenon:
1) Lower peak of tuning;
2) During test, primary voltage is high, and high voltage is relatively low;
even when the voltage has not reached to the test voltage, primary voltage
had reached to rated voltage, and the voltage of circuit loop reduced
automatically;
Causes:
1) Electric reactor doesn’t match with capacity of test object, and resonance
point has not been found correctly;
2) Test object has large comsuption, and Q value of the system is too low;
3) The high voltage output of exciting transformer is too low;
4) High voltage connecting line is too long or high voltage corona discharge
wire has not been adopted
Faults removing method:

1) Connect the compensating capacitor into test loop in parallel, so as to
increase the capacity of circuit loop;
2) Try to connect multiple electric reactors in series, so as to increase
inductance value of circuit loop;
3) Increase output voltage of excitation transformer;
4) Drying treatments for test object, enhance insulating strength of test object,
and reduce active loss of loop;
5) Generally when the device has relatively high voltage output, adopt high
voltage corona discharge wire, or displace common high voltage output
wire with shorter wire, not more than 5m generally.
If all the above mentioned has been done, and the fault could not be
removed, please contact the manufacturer, and do not disassemble the device!
