Congratulations to this month's Hidden Picture winner, Shannon Staniford. She receives a $25 gift card. The hidden blue egg was on page 23 in the Ierna's ad. In this issue, you will be looking for a small yellow flower. Remember, it is in an ad, not the editorial. There are a ton of fun events coming in May and early June. Check inside for details. Where ever you are, whatever you are doing, on Mother's Day, stop and take some time: Mothers are our protectors, our teachers, our guides through life. Most of them pour their hearts into their children, celebrating the successes and suffering in empathy through the heartbreaks. And they no longer do it with the luxury of staying home with their kids. The majority of women work outside the home, a financial necessity in these times. Yet, in many households, they still carry the lioness' share of the work and worry.
Today, on Mother's Day, we have a designated chance to share our appreciation for all they have done, for the kisses, the care, the advice, for all they do to try to make our lives easier. We will celebrate with cards, special meals, gifts and flowers. But most mothers will tell you that what they want most is time. As we grow up and get involved with our own lives and families, it sometimes gets harder to break away enough time to just sit and talk, to laugh over childhood memories or to help out with jobs that need to be done. So, take the time this Mother's Day (and everyday), because someday, there will be no time. Have a wonderful May and send us all your community pictures to share and possibly win the Cover Photo Contest!

he culinary department of Wharton High School, headed by
Chef Edward Bujarski and wife, Lourdes Sarmiento, delivers
a fine-dining experience for $7 every Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Bujarski took over the department in 2001 and Sarmiento came on
board in 2004. The facility is a massive kitchen and restaurant. The
kitchen is two or three times the size of the dining room and is run like
a kitchen at any other professional restaurant except that this one is
staffed entirely by high school kids. There are four different "teams"
that students rotate through so they learn all phases of the process.
Gard Manger: This station prepares the first course, usually a salad, soup or other appetizer.
Saucier: This station prepares the main course. Patissier: Bakes the breads and prepares the desert.
Baking/Pastry: This station keeps seasonal baked goods stocked in the pie case.
Max Hardy began his culinary training in the Culinary Arts Program at Wharton High School. While Max was in this high school Culinary Arts program he started his own catering company and was later contracted by Wharton High School’s Executive Chef to cater events for the Tampa community throughout the school year. Determined to continue his education in Culinary Arts, Hardy received a full scholarship
to Johnson & Wales University for his exceptional culinary skills. Graduating at the top of his class from Johnson & Wales, with a degree in Culinary Arts, Hardy founded his own private catering company Chef Max Miami.
The Wharton Culinary Department does not just serve food on campus. It also caters events all year long. The students cater large events where they will serve 250 or more people: 30 different courses at 10 different stations. The department never charges more than $15 per head and all of the profits go right back into the program. The department caters the Teacher of the Year Awards at the David A. ig Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay is reminding the community of its
vision that all kids have the opportunity to reach their full potential, and they’re asking for your help. The agency pairs volunteer mentors with children facing adversity, so that local youth in Pasco, Polk and Hillsborough Counties have the one-to-one guidance they need—guidance that leads to academic success and positive choices. Big Brothers Big Sisters matches “Bigs” (mentors) with “Littles” (mentees) throughout Pasco, Polk and Hillsborough Counties, and it has two programs it’s specifically recruiting for right now, thanks to grant funding provided by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. One program targets at-risk youth, ages 9 and up, who live in Dade City. While many of the children served by Big Brothers Big Sisters are in single-parent and low-income households, that’s not always the case. Big Brothers Big Sisters is the
oldest and most successful mentoring organization in the country, and it holds itself accountable for demonstrating positive academic and social outcomes for the children served. Last year, in Pasco, Polk and Hillsborough Counties: • 96% of our Littles were promoted to the next grade level• 95% showed an increase in self-confidence• 99% had no involvement in the juvenile justice system The agency depends on community support, in the form of both volunteers and donations, in order to achieve these results. It costs approximately $1,000 a year to make and maintain a match between a Big and a Little, to cover background checks and ongoing professional support services. “Operation Bigs is our newest mentoring program, and provides support for many single and two-parent military families who appreciate the opportunity to provide their child with more academic support as well as new cultural and other opportunities from another trusted adult,” says Stephen Koch, CEO and President of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay.

You may have a problem with your hearing and need to see an audiologist if you have trouble hearing
conversation in a noisy environment such as a restaurant, are unable to hear people talk to you without looking at
them, or have a constant ringing or pain in your ears. The first step in treatment of a hearing problem is a
hearing evaluation by an audiologist.
Although most hearing loss is permanent, an audiologist can determine the best treatment, which may include hearing aids, assistive listening devices, and hearing
rehabilitation.
As part of Better Hearing Month, Florida Medical Clinic is hosting an open house at both of their Audiology
offices in Wesley Chapel, 27634 Cashford Circle and in Zephyrhills, 38103 Market Square, on
Tuesday, May 8th and Wednesday, May 9th. Appointments are necessary,

SOS! “SAVE OUR SHINS”
Paul R. Wharton High School, led by current 2011 Hillsborough County Track Coach of the Year, WesNewton, has established itself as one of the most successful programs in the State of Florida for Track &Field and Cross Country. To continue this tradition, our Track is in dire need of a “resurfacing”. Wharton’s Track has never beenresurfaced in its’ 15 year history. The current condition of our facility is in serious need of replacement. Our goal is to construct a rubberized track, a common type of track surface installed in track venuesthroughout the country. Resurfacing benefits are far reaching:• StudentAthletes: Rubberized tracks have proven to reduce injury• Environmentally: Rubberized tracks utilize recycled materials• Community: Rubberized tracks will allow the school and community to host Track Meets drawing teams from around the state, thus bringing in revenue to local businesses• Wharton High School: A rubberized track will benefit Wharton High School as studentsutilize the track during their High School career from HOPE class to Athletics. We are asking for your Partnership to continue to invest in our Student Athletes, and their continuedsuccess in Track & Field Competition, as well as support the training efforts of our Athletic Programs and Clubs. The “Save Our Shins”, Wharton High School Athletic Booster Club, Track Resurfacing Initiative hasthree “Cat Levels” of sponsorship. We value your Partnership and thank you in advance for your considered support. Any questions maybe directed to Andy Ritter at 813- 7162128 or aritter@tampabay.rr.com. v

Paradise World Transportation offers a luxury shuttle bus to Tropicana Field that covers roundtrip transportation for just $9.95 per person. This is a stunning deal for residents of New Tampa. Save your money! Gas prices are nearly $4.00/gallon and

Behind the Pink Ribbon
By Erica Collura
People almost always recognize the pink colored ribbons printed on shirts, towels, coffee cups, or just
about anything. That distinct pink ribbon has become uniquely identified with breast
cancer. Breast cancer, two words no woman wants to hear in her doctor's office. But as scary as these words may be there is hope. Breast cancer treatment has evolved significantly over the past two decades. Advances in breast cancer research and improved technology have turned a once
devastating diagnosis into a treatable disease. Paramount in achieving this is early detection. For this reason, Dr. Collins cannot stress enough to women 40 years of age and older the importance of yearly mammograms. Breast cancer most often presents without symptoms which is why screening mammography is an important tool for early detection. When a diagnosis of breast cancer is made Dr. Collins reminds her patients that there are treatment
options. This disease does not affect everyone the same and treatment is not "one size fits all." Surgical treatment options are much improved and do not always require complete removal of the breast (mastectomy). Most patients have the option of breast conservation therapy where only the cancerous portion of the breast is removed. Even in cases where mastectomy is required women now have various options available for breast reconstruction. Most of these surgical treatments can be offered by Dr. Collins and the facilities at Florida Medical Clinic. But it should be kept in mind that cancer treatment is best achieved through a team approach where many doctors from different specialties come together to provide a treatment plan for an individual patient. Dr. Collins will work with physicians in other specialties at the Florida Medical Clinic to offer comprehensive care to her patients. At Florida Medical Clinic Dr. R. Collins will perform surgeries including breast surgery, advanced laparoscopic procedures, intestinal surgery, hernia repairs, gall bladder
surgery, skin cancer removal, wound care, and port placements, to name a few. For patient convenience, Dr. Collins is available in two locations: Zephyrhills, 813-780-8160 and Tampa, 813-979-7707. v

GFWC New Tampa Juniorettes today announced it has teamed with the White House to become

GFWC New Tampa Juniorettes are one of thousands of organizations that have joined forces to deliver the President’s Volunteer Service Award and honor the volunteers who strengthen our Nation. As a Certifying Organization for the Award, GFWC New Tampa Juniorettes is responsible for verifying service hours, nominating potential recipients and delivering the Award.“We are extremely proud to recognize our most outstanding volunteers with
the President’s Volunteer Service Award,” said Patricia Murphy, GFWC New Tampa Juniorettes Advisor. “GFWC New Tampa Juniorette volunteers are role models in our community, donating their time, energy and talent to bring us closer together as neighbors and a Nation. The Award is our way of thanking these volunteers and inspiring everyone in our community to make volunteering a central part of their lives.”“Even if you’ve never volunteered before, the President’s Volunteer Service Award is within your reach,” Murphy said. “There are so many ways to contribute, and every volunteer hour makes a difference in improving the quality of
life for others. We encourage everyone to get involved. Together, we can strengthen America – one hour at a time.”
The Award is issued by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, a group convened to help foster and encourage a culture of volunteer service and

Girl Scouts is celebrating 100 years of building girls of courage, confidence, and character, and Girl Scouts of West Central Florida (GSWCF) invites all girls entering grades 1 – 12 to celebrate with us at camp this summer, whether or not they are Girl Scouts! Overnight camps are offered throughout June and July at two of the council’s camp properties, and day camps are offered throughout the eight counties GSWCF serves – there’s something for every girl! Non-Girl Scouts are welcome to register for summer camp, and many girls join each year through the camp pathway as part of the new-age membership model of Girl
Scouts. Girls who join at the time of summer camp pay a one-time, annual membership fee of $12. GSWCF-owned Camps Dorothy Thomas, Scoutcrest and Wildwood are American Camp Association (ACA) accredited; three of 16 ACA-accredited camps within a 100 mile radius of Tampa, according to the ACA website Horseback riding, water skiing, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), healthy living, arts and crafts, and swimming are among the many activities offered at Girl Scout summer camps. Can’t decide on just one? Not quite sure about sleeping away for a week? Girls can customize their camp
experiences. All sessions include sports, nature exploration, and arts and crafts, and campfires for a well-rounded camp experience. If parents are looking for a safe, secure, nurturing all-girl environment where girls of all ages are taught respect for self and others, and have amazing opportunities to explore their passions – Girl Scout camp is the place for your daughter. Girl Scout camp sessions are also very affordable with pricing starting at $75/girl for day camp and $175/girl for overnight camp. Girl Scout summer camp programs encompass a rich history of 100 years of providing outdoor experiences for girls. Juliette Gordon Low founded Girl Scouts in 1912 on the premise that girls should be given the opportunity to develop physically, mentally and spiritually. Under her guidance, she encouraged girls to get out of their home environments and into the open air. The first Girl Scouts hiked, played basketball, went on camping trips and learned to tell time by the stars. “One hundred years later, girls are still having a blast at camp!” said Kim Jowell, CEO, GSWCF. “One of my favorite times of year is going out to our summer camps to interact with girls. I see girls of all
ages arrive at camp somewhat shy and hesitant about the days ahead, but after several days of the Girl Scout camp experience, they leave more self-confident, with new friends and truly exhausted from all the activities!”
