We have some beautiful children’s gifts for 2010, with our contemporary designs hand-crafted using traditional techniques. New Peruvian finger puppets, hand-painted leather money boxes from India and decorative handmade paper hangings from Nepal all add to our key collections of fun accessories and decorative items for both boys and girls.

The finger puppets, which are crocheted by eye from drawings,
are made by women’s groups organised in associations in the highland areas of Puno. Approximately 60 women are involved in production, some of whom are in the rural areas on the banks of Lake Titikaka.
Handicraft production allows the women to supplement the
small income which their families make from farming.

These chimes are made from Albesia wood, which grows
extremely quickly. Mitra Bali has a tree-planting scheme to replenish any wood used but also to promote reforestation to protect the livelihoods of indigenous people. About twenty artisans
and their families are supported by the production
of these handicrafts.

These gorgeous embroidered mini boxes are from Touch of India. The materials are sourced locally and issued to the ‘hand work’ artisans to be embroidered stretched over a frame. The embroidery is then sent to the ‘fitters’ who fit it to the shapes of the boxes.
