I think India must be one of the few places where culturally and traditionally , there is so much respect for elders. Only India is one country where we touch the feet of our elders as a mark of respect .But the time is change , now it is artificial . Today elders are consider as extra person of the family.

Elder Abuse

Estimated 2.1 million elderly adults are abused each year

Victims have decreased quality of life, increased feelings of helplessness and increased stress and psychological disorders (results in increased ER visits, hospitalization, and higher mortality rates)

Forms of Elder Abuse

Physical Emotional Sexual Neglect Self Neglect & Abandonment Financial Exploitation

Any act that intends to cause physical injury

Depriving the individual of food Shaking Improper Restraining Hitting Over-/Under- medicating

The victims are often Denied: • Food • Water• Shelter

Self Neglect

Self inflicted and often unintentional

Elderly may refuse to eat, drink or take medication

May become abusive to the caregiver and/or become destructive

Financial Exploitation

Ranges from simply misusing funds to committing embezzlement

Forgery or even forcing the elder adult to unknowingly transfer their property over to the caregiver

No Proper Infrastructure

For our children 10 years of school i.e., from the age of 16 . Before that we have kindergarten ,before it we have nursery , before it we have play school that help to our children . But no such support system for elderly i.e., we have no NANA NANI,DADA-DADI park or organization for elders or senior citizen.

Elder adults who are:• Frail• Unable to accomplish basic daily activities• Dependent on a caregiver

Nearly all victims live with their abuser Women>Men Occurs most frequently in individuals with:

• Short term memory loss• Psychiatric disorders• Alcohol abuse

Conclusion

In essence we need to remember the just touching the feet of our elders is not enough . It should not become a meaning less gesture which we through because of tradition , rather it should be a gesture born out of genuine affection , love and respect . And we never forget that where our elders are today we will be tomorrow.
