Physical and Chemical Changes How do we classify properties of matter as chemical or

physical and how do we distinguish between physical and chemical changes?

DO NOW: Look at the objects in front of you. Describe them (color, smell, shape, etc).

PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

PHYSICAL PROPERT

Properties of an element or compound that can be

observed without a chemical reaction of the substance

SUBSTANCE DOES NOT CHANGE

Ex. -  Density (amount of mass per volume) -  Color -  Smell -  Melting point -  boiling point -  shape

CHEMICAL PROPERTY

Properties of an element or compound in chemical

reactions.

SUBSTANCE CHANGES Ex. - flammability (burning) - reactions with acids of bases - changes when exposed to heat - whether it produces gas when mixed with other substances

LET’S TRY SOME Example Physical or Chemical Property

Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius (oC).

Diamonds are capable of cutting glass.

Water can be separated by electrolysis into hydrogen and oxygen.

Vinegar will react with baking soda.

Sugar is capable of dissolving in water.

Bromine has a red color.

Aluminum has a low density.

PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHANGES

All around us matter is constantly changing. In chemistry, we will classify

changes as being either physical changes or chemical changes.

GROUP ACTIVITY With a partner

1.  At your table, complete the reading and fill the KEY POINTS in your graphic organizer

2.  Fill the EXAMPLES in your graphic organizer 3.  Conduct the short lab to distinguish between a physical change and a

chemical change. (15 mins)
