One Successful OTS

Terrified• This OTS was successful as the makers of the film used the distorted,

non-diegetic sound at the start of the sequence.

• This was done to make the audience feel uncomfortable and scared. This follows the aim of horror films: to frighten its audience.

• Another technique they used was the voice over of laughter when the camera is setting the scene. The laugh creates a sense of fear to the audience as they feel something bad is happening off screen.

• This raises the narrative enigma: what is happening that we cannot see?

Terrified

• In the title sequence, the background behind the text is black. The colour black is a generic convention of the horror genre as it signifies danger or death.

• Because the makers used black after the audience has witnessed a murder makes them more unnerving because the audience have the initial shock of a murder at the start of the film.

Summary• To summarise the horror genre:

• It contains many sub-genres which has sub-genres within them so there’s a big variety of types of horror films.

• The intentions of horror films is to scare the audience by playing with their fears and making them feel uncomfortable.

• Horror films would accomplish this by using weapons, blood, murder, using red and black with low key lighting to take the viewers out of their comfort zone.
