Problem Statement
• While people are pursuing ever-growing high quality of their lives today. This leads to more and more facilities and home appliances poured into their buildings. How to control and manage these versatile facilities and appliances in a house?
• Usually conventional wall switches are located in different corners of a house and, thus necessitate the need of manual operations like pressing to turn the loads on or off. It becomes very difficult for the elderly or physically handicapped people to operate them. How to help them?
Abstract
• In this project electrical appliances are controlled through human voice. • This project is built on Android software through which we develop an
application that can control and show the status of the electrical appliances.
• Microcontroller P89V51RD2 is used in the project to act as an interface between the application and the hardware. Appliances are connected in parallel form.
• The commands are given to the application which then sends the commands to the microcontroller attached to the electrical appliances.
• Appliances work according to the command given by the user through voice on the application.
Introduction
Home automation is the residential extension of "building automation". It is automation of the:• Home• Housework or • Household activity.
Home automation may include centralized control:• Lighting of entire house .• HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) • Appliances and • Other systems (Like home weather station, water sensors etc)
Home Automation (HA) provides improved convenience, comfort, energy efficiency and security.
Literature Survey
1. Alexandru-Corneliu Olteanu, George-Daniel Oprina, Nicolae pu and Sven Zeisberg, “Enabling mobile devices for home automation using ZigBee”
In this paper author describes the use of android phones for home automation using ZigBee technology. He investigates several methods to equip an Android device with a dongle capable of ZigBee communication and proposes a scalable architecture, with three abstraction layers, that scales over multiple communication channels.
2. Nicholas Mulhern, Neil McCaffrey, Nicholas Beretta, Eugene Chabot PhD, Ying Sun PhD University of Rhode Island Department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering Kingston, RI 02881, USA, “Designing Android Applications using Voice Controlled Commands For Hands free interaction with Common Household Devices”
Literature Survey(cntd)
In this paper the author describes about utilizing assistive technology to aid persons with neuromuscular disabilities by communicating with house hold appliances through an android phone with Bluetooth technology.
3. David Huggins-Daines, Mohit Kumar, Arthur Chan, Alan W Black, Mosur Ravishankar, and Alex I. Rudnicky “pocket sphinx: a free, real-time continuous speech recognition system for hand-held devices”
In this paper, author presents a preliminary case study on the
porting and optimization of CMU SPHINX-II, a popular open source large vocabulary continuous speech recognition (LVCSR) system, to hand-held devices.
Disadvantages
• Bluetooth only has a range of 15 to 30 feet depending on the device.• Bluetooth uses the battery power of a particular device in order to
operate. This can drain a cell phone battery, causing it to run out of juice long before it would have if Bluetooth was not powered on.
• Cannot operate devices from outside the house.
Proposed System
• We have designed a typical and simple Home Automation System using GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) technology that controls electrical devices at home from a remote location by a simple android smart phone.
• This is achieved by sending an SMS to receiver present at home which is in turn connected to a hardware kit.
• The SMS received by the receiver is transmitted to the microcontroller which reads the message and controls the appropriate device. This operation is performed by program written in assembly language code that is stored in the flash memory which is in-built into the microcontroller.
Advantages
• Can communicate with the home appliances from anywhere if network is available.
• Helps disabled people• Helps us in utilizing minimum energy by helping us switch off appliances
just through a voice command.• Easy to use.• Integrates all the electrical appliances so that they can be controlled
together when needed.
System Requirements
