*1882-Laurenceville School in New Jersey nation’s first high school team

*At least 48 Native American tribes played this sport.

Statistics*Nearly 25,000 men play lacrosse at over 400 colleges and universities.

*Over 5,500 women participate in lacrosse programs at 240 colleges and universities.

*There are 11,500 players (7,500 men & 4,000 women) nationally play lacrosse.

*Youth participation ranges from 5 to 17 years of age, with over 4,500 programs in the U.S.

Rules*Lacrosse is played by two teams of 10 players.

(A goalkeeper, 3 defensemen, 3 midfielders, 3 attack men)

*Generally , games are 48 min. long, with 12 min quarters, 2 min. break between quarters, and half time is 10 min. long.

*Teams change sides between periods.

*Body Checking is permitted if the opponent has the ball. Contact must occur from front or side, above waist and below shoulders.

*A player may gain possession of the ball by dislodging it from an opponent’s crosse with a stick check.

*Players may run with the all in the crosse, pass and catch the ball. Only goalkeeper may touch the ball with his hands.
