Brain, Body and Burnout Ignorance & the Neuroscience of Wellness

Hilde Eiselen

Who we areo LeadingAlive. is about connecting wholehearted

living, effective working and health, through a neuroscience perspective.

o Our goal today is to raise awareness that we risk our health, quality of life and even death, by ignoring the indicators of stress.

o We want to inspire you to enhance how you engage with those you live and work with in a way that respects your life.

Ignorance can kill.

Burnout can kill.

2015:In the US workplace stress is thought to contribute to 120,000 deaths/year,

costing €168.7bn in healthcare costs. (Harvard Business School / Stanford University)

Stress is the second most frequently reported work-related health problem in Europe, after musculoskeletal disorders. (European Agency for Safety and Health at Work)

How ignorant are we about our own wellness?

Our body-brain integration?

Burnout can flatten you, temporarily or permanently.

We do what we do and we don’t want to know!

You can see it coming if you choose

Influences converge

Because it is SCIENCE, let‘s do an experiment.

Look at the word on your blue card.

Stress from our brain’s point of view“Even quite mild acute stress can cause a rapid and dramatic loss of prefrontal cognitive abilities, and more prolonged stress exposure causes architectural changes in prefrontal dendrites.

Neural circuits responsible for conscious self-control are highly vulnerable to even mild stress. When they shut down, primal impulses go unchecked and mental paralysis sets in.”

- Amy Arnsten –Prof. of Neurobiology, Yale Medical School

Consequences of Our Choices

Our Business/Work Culture breeds Burnout

Our Hearts ache for Freedom

Two hemispheres, different views = Whole Brain Perspective

The Brain and Relationships

Our Brain is Social by Design

Conclusions

o Do health professionals take care of themselves?

o Could we?

o Do you choose to?

“With awareness comes the possibility of choice and change.”

- Dr. Dan Siegel-Clinical Prof. of Psychiatry, UCLA
