FIRE DAMPERS –Where are they used?
SECTION 706 FIRE WALLS
“restricts the spread of fire and extends continuously from the foundation to or through
the roof , with sufficient structural stability under fire conditions to allow collapse of
construction on either side without collapse of the wall”
Required to have 3 hour rating for most occupancies
2 hours for certain occupancies and 4 hours for
hazardous
Protected openings when not on a lot line.
Opening size limited unless both buildings are
sprinkled
Ducts/ Air Transfer openings shall comply with Section 716

SECTION 709 FIRE PARTITIONS
A vertical assembly of materials designed to restrict
the spread of fire in which openings are protected.
Not Continuous between f loor levels – vertical assemblies
Corridors, dwelling & sleeping unit separation, tenant separation in Malls & Elevatorlobby separation
Generally rated 1-2 hours depending on number of stories

FIRE and SMOKE DAMPERS –Where are they used?
SECTION 708 SHAFT ENCLOSURES
Shaft Enclosure – The wall or construction forming the boundaries of a shaft.
An enclosed space extending through one or more stories of a building, connecting vertical openings in successive floors, or floors and roof.
Used as vertical opening enclosures
Constructed as fire barriers or horizontalassemblies
Generally rated 1-2 hours depending onnumber of stories
cts/ Air Transfer openings shall comply with Section 716
