The Nuremberg Code
December 9th, 1946
Twenty three German scientists and
physicians were charged with crimes against
humanity.
Experiments were conducted on members of
concentration camps without permission.
Most died or were crippled.

As a Result
The Nuremberg Code was written in 1948 in
order to provide guidelines for medical
consent and volunteering for medical
experiments.
It was not a formal law.

Tuskegee Syphilis Study
A study carried out by the U.S. Public Health
Service.
They kept track of 400 poverty stricken,
syphilis infected males for 40 years.
The subjects were provided with free medicalexams, but the doctors did not tell them about
the disease.

Tuskegee Syphilis Study
(cont.) Even after Penicillin was discovered to cure
Syphilis the studies were continued.
In 1972, the U.S. Department of Health,
Education, and Welfare stopped studies after
they were discovered.
Amends were made with the test subjects and
families in 1997 by President Clinton.

What does this have to do
with Henrietta Lacks?
At this time there were not many ethics codesin the medical field. Many doctors believed
that since they were providing free healthcare
the patients should have no problem with
testing. Henrietta was unknowingly part of atest which benefited the world.
