What is obesity?

Obesity is caused by an energy imbalance: when calorie intake exceeds expenditure of calories, the surplus energy is stored as body fat.

There are a multitude of factors contributing to the increased energy consumption and decreased energy expenditure that are responsible for obesity, including:

• Decrease of physical activities• Higher food consumption, or an increase in energy density (particularly fat and sugar content) of the food we eat• Social, economic, educational and cultural factors

Obesity can be determined in different ways:

• Body mass index (BMI)• Desirable weight for height • Waist to hip ratio • Body fat %

How is obesity measured?

• BMI is a measurement used to indicate obesity and morbid obesity in adults. BMI is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by his/her height in meters squared. An adult with a BMI of 30 or greater is considered obese while a BMI of 35 or greater indicate sever obesity

How does obesity effect our health?

• Coronary heart disease• Type 2 diabetes• Cancers (e.g., endometrial, breast, and colon)• Hypertension (high blood pressure)• Dyslipidemia (e.g., high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)• Stroke• Liver and Gallbladder disease• Sleep apnea and respiratory problems• Osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal complications• Gynecological problems (abnormal menses, infertility).

Obesity can also lead to social and economic disadvantages:

Salary: A relationship between body weight and wages has been studied(Sabia, Economics and Human Biology, 2011)

Education: Obese adolescents are less likely to obtain a college degree (24% success for normal weight adolescents vs. 10% for obese)(Fowler-Brown, Obesity, 2012)

Stigmatisation in children: Children who have to rate their liking of other children (on drawings) with normal weight, obesity or several disabilities consistently rate the obese child lowest.(Latner, Obes Res, 2003)
