Dale Edwards and Chad Ellingson in front of a mural at Ellingson Angus Ranch depicting the
next great calving-ease bull of the Angus breed, IDENTITY
Welcome to our 2012 beef catalogue
WE have travelled around the world and around Australia to bring you, the beef producer the best and most well
researched product available. With the introduction of a number of new bulls from the United States, Australia and New Zealand and our current crop of bulls, we feel we have the highest type, best structured, highest growth and biggest numbered bulls on the market.
All our bulls are closely scrutinised for phenotype, temperament, pedigree and structure.
We don’t recommend these bulls because someone sitting at a desk trying to reach sales targets tells us to, we recommend them because we passionately believe they can and will make a difference to both stud and commercial cattle operations. The bulls are all personally inspected by myself, Chad Ellingson in the US and Lindsay Jones in New Zealand.
“Cattlemen choosing bulls for cattlemen, not salesmen behind a desk.”

Synchronisation Programs: We are at the absolute cutting edge of synchronised breeding programs in this country. Many large programs conducted through the years, have proved the consistency of the protocols we have been using and modifying as we go along. While the success of any program is usually measured in percentages, I think we also need to be mindful of just how user friendly we can make it, to not only the cattle owners but also the staff involved in running it. We are only too happy to help anyone wanting advice on their individual breeding programs.
Semen Sales: We have a bull team available to assist a wide range of cattle operations in their quest to be more profitable and in simple terms, to breed better cattle that all people involved can be proud of. All bulls have been extensively researched and physically inspected and while we don’t pretend to be perfect, we are certainly proud of the amount of work put into each bull’s selection. We feel each bull has a purpose and can and will add something to each individual breeding program.
Ultrasound Pregnancy Testing: Now over forty thousand pregnancy tests this per year, I would like to think we know what we are doing. Ultrasound is still the most cost effective and highly accurate way of diagnosing pregnancy status available. Producers should still be aware that ultrasound is only as good as the person using it and only a trained, experienced technician should be used. Next time you enquire about someone to pregnancy test your herd, ask the operator where they were trained and by whom. If the answer is not satisfactory, as in they learnt it from a book, then don’t use them. If you have any queries on qualified technicians please feel free to ask.
Freeze Branding: While freeze branding would have to rate as ‘not my favorite job’, it does have a very enjoyable upside. That is talking to cattle producers on all subjects great and small that have to do with the cattle industry. Due to the time consuming nature of branding, it is one of the few ways you can get a breeder to stand still all day and talk about his or her cattle. You also get a close up and personal look at most of the current crop of AI sires being used; this certainly makes a day’s branding a very worthwhile experience. We like to think we do a good job of it as well.
Merchandise: We are now one of the larger suppliers of CIDRs to the beef industry. Please feel free to enquire about AI merchandise prices.

Sally SchultzRuminant Nutritionist
It is well known and documented that minerals play an essential role in the health, fertility and productivity of your herd. But does your average grazing beef herd need any mineral supplementation? Is pasture able to supply enough minerals for optimal herd performance?
Our aim for livestock is often that all of the required minerals be supplied through grazing pastures. Unfortunately this is not always the case. For this to occur you need:
• A good level of mineral and biological activity in your soils. The mineral content of your pastures will be a direct reflection of the mineral content and the biological activity within your soils. Minerals are the building blocks of plant performance. Active soil biology is the link that allows minerals in the soil to be available for the plants.
• Pastures to be a biodiverse mix of grass, broadleaf plants, legumes and herbs. The more species of plants, particularly perennials, within the pasture sward the better. This allows the cattle to select a diet that reflects their nutritional requirement. You may have noticed for example that cattle at times will graze thistles that are very high in copper and other times they will not touch them.
• Rotational grazing management that allows a good biodiverse sward and free choice of pasture species
Most of us are on a continuous path to improving soil, plant and grazing conditions for our livestock and I think
this is really important for long term productivity. But often mineral supplementation can be helpful while the on-going improvements are being implemented in soil and pasture management. Mineral supplementation can actually add to your soil mineral levels by spreading additional minerals through the manure. Certain classes of stock also have higher mineral requirements like early lactating cows, cows on AI programs and growing young stock.
It doesn’t have to be difficult. It can be as simple as offering free choice mineral licks near water points. To start with, offer livestock just plain sea salt in one container and seaweed meal from bull kelp in another. Once they have slowed down on their salt and seaweed consumption then offer a mineral lick as well. Talk to your local nutritionist or rural store to get an idea of the best lick for your area. Make sure that you use licks that contain both macro minerals like calcium, magnesium and phosphorus and micro minerals like boron, copper, cobalt, selenium and zinc in a salt base. Molasses in the lick encourages uptake when not required so is best in small amounts or avoided altogether. Another option is to mix your own or offer the minerals free choice so that the livestock can choose their mineral intake (this is very effective). Again talk to your local nutritionist to work out the best option for your farm.
The main thing is to have minerals offered to the stock all year round. This will allow animals to top up as they require ensuring optimum animal performance and minimising stress and metabolic disease, resulting in greater farm productivity.
