Key Questions
- Who are we? What is Greening Greenfield?
- What is ICLEI Cities for Climate Protection?
- Why did we choose it?
- What can you find out by doing an audit?
- What did we learn from the Audit?
- How are we using the Audit?
- DISCUSSION: How can it be useful to YOU?
Using “greening” as theeconomical and inspirational engine to help build a sustainable Greenfield
so future generations can enjoy life in this beautiful abundant valley

GROWTH Population and the Planet
In my lifetime population has doubled
from 3 billion to over 6 billion
It took 50,000 hears for population to reach 1 billion but only another 123 years to reach 2 billion
BUT Our planet stayed the same size

Cities for Climate Protection program
Greenfield Joined, Feb ’08
Goal:Help cities and towns reduce Climate Change emissions to ZERO worldwide.
Philosophy: If you cannot measure it, you cannot control it.
Why Did We Choose ICLEI?We needed to get Gov on board!
• It is a respected international program - UN
• It offers support - people, materials, & software
• It gives Town Gov a step by step time line
• It compliments other programs-TT, 10% etc. DON’T STOP DOING THESE!
What are the ICLEI steps?Where are we in the ICLEI process?
1. Sign on – designate staff liaisons – Feb. 2008
2. Engage People in the Process - ongoing
3. Get ICLEI software & training – June 2008
4. Conduct the Energy Audit & Emissions Analysis & Write Greenfield Energy Audit – June 2008 - May 2009
What are the Next Steps?
5. Set Long Term Goals – Feb 2009By 2050: 80% reduction in C02 & ZERO energy dollars leaving the community
6. Analyze options & Set Achievable Milestones
7. Draft the Plan: Gov’t & Community-wide Plan
8. Implement the Plan
9. Monitor & Report Progress
10. Revise & RE-Implement Plan as Needed

Community – Wide Audit
Data Sources
• Natural gas – From Berkshire Gas, for usage and cost, broken down by residential, commercial, industrial for FY01 & FY08
• Electricity – from WMECO , broken down by residential, commercial, industrial for FY08. Cost based on average $/kwh in Greenfield. FY01 3% more, based on fact that electricity usage dropped about 1% last few years.
• Oil – Residential usage based on # of households that use oil in 2000 census + USDOE usage/household. Cost based on average cost in Greenfield in ‘01&’08.
Data Sources
• Oil – Commercial & Industrial – Usage based on square footage of buildings from Greenfield Assessors office and USDOE data on energy use per sq ft.
• Propane, Wood, Coal – Residential usage based on # of households using that fuel as noted in 2000 Census and USDOE data on usage per household. Cost based on average cost in Greenfield in FY01 & FY08.
• Propane, Wood, Coal – Commercial & Industrial usage was not available.
• Gasoline & Diesel for Transportation – US Census, Registry of Motor Vehicles, and US DOE
Community-wide Audit…Most Startling Observation - $$
In FY2001 we spent
$48.1 million on energyWith 7,905 households that is $6,142 / household
With 18,666 people that is $2,601 / person
Most Startling Observation - $$$$$
In FY2008 we spent
$85.8 million on energyAssuming the same number of people
$10,951 / household
$4,638 / person

Greenfield’s CommitmentMayor Forgey’s Announcement, January 15, 2009
By 2050
80% reduction in climate change emissions
ZERO Greenfield energy $$$leaving the region
Cities for Climate Protection SOFTWARE –does / does not do
WHAT WORKS:
-Spreadsheets to gather data
- Converts data to common unit of your choice (MMBtu)
- Calculates climate change emissions (lbs, tons)
- Cost of gov’t energy use
WHAT’S MISSING:
- COST not included in community-wide audit section
- Data you enter is NOT visible in report – hard to ck data entry
-?USE EPA Portfolio Manager for buildings?
- Does NOT look at TYPES of use - elec, heat, transp fuels
NEW Software Soon
6. Analyze options & Set Achievable Milestones7. Draft the Plan: Gov’t & Community-wide Plan
8. Implement the Plan
9. Monitor & Report Progress
10. Revise & RE-Implement Plan as Needed

NEXT STEP…..
Create a plan!!
Government - Next Steps
Assess - make a plan
Buildings - FREE DOER Audits - $$ - ESCOs etc
Transportation – buy fuel efficient cars
Lighting – assess need – turn off – use eef
Water Sewer – efficient pumps, heat recovery
Waste management – reduce (pay as throw) etc
Integrate concept of SUSTAINABILITY
into the Town Master Plan
Individuals – Next stepsMotivate!! – offer support, tools & $
Homeowners
Business people
Faith Communities
Landlords
Renters
Youth etc.
Set goals - Make pledges - Take Action
LESS IS MORE!
Energy Use: Per Capita

What we can do… State Gov taking action ---
– MA Green Communities Act
- MA Global Warming Solutions
- Green Jobs Bill
- cleaner electricity - RGGI

Step #2 – Make Zero Carbon EnergyCleanly, Renewably, Locally
Hydropower for Electricity
Solar on buildings and at the land fill
Wind – regionally
Biomass (wood) for Heat & Electricity
Transp. fuel from Electricity & Biomass Geothermal
What we can do… Town and Community Action

SUMMARY
- ICLEI program helpful to get Town gov’t on board – ICLEI staff/knowledge helpful
- Data collection process put new systems in place in Town gov record keeping
- Data collected useful to raise awareness, and motivate people to make changes -- Btu/sq ft graph & $$$ leaving Town
- We hope creating an Action Plan will continue to raise awareness and motivate
