Measuring the height of a building with a stick

Inaccessible heights can be easily „measured“ by using a stick that is hold rectagular to the ground. The theorem of inter-secting lines can help for calculating the height.

Measuring heights with a Jacob’s staff

Inaccessible heights can also be „measured“ by using a tool like showed on the picture.

More information about the method and worksheet

Students can try it out hands-on. With three pointsthe equation of a quadratic function can be calculated. Does the graph of the calculated function fit to all points/parts of the hanging chain? Have a look at the task

Is this a parabola?

With Geoboards students of grade 5 can discover area, perimeter, reflections, rotations and the geometric concepts behind it.

Tasks and report from work in the classroom are coming soon. Here one website.

Active work with a Geoboard

Students may use these tangrams, construct und cut it out it on cardboard or foam rubber. The red shapes (as many as needed) can be used to form a heart, e.g. in more than one way (idea from Tatjana Vinokurova). Students like this. Creativity and exact construction if the pieces are needed.

A puzzle: Tangram-hearts

Easy paper folding

It is easy to fold a paper as shown in the short outline instruction. But it is a challenge for older students to proof that it is a parabola!

Right or wrong?

Is the circle line reguarly divided in 12 parts/sections? Justify or falsify it!Hint: isocelis triangles may help for argumentation.

Unforgettable

What is the relation between 4r² and peeling an apple?

We will contínue presenting hands-on activities that are easy to prepare, don’t last long and keep in students’ mind for a long time.
