Defining Adolescence

• Hard to define• Changes over time and place• Transition between childhood and adulthood• Time of guidance to protect from the

temptations of adulthood• Preparation for adult activities

• Adolescence is “a fully grown animal in a cage, who doesn’t know quite when freedom will occur or how to handle it.”

• Is adolescence storm and stress in every society?

• Initiation Rites- Ceremonies/Rituals in which a person is accepted into a new position or status (rites of passage)

• Ie. Graduation, birthdays, weddings, etc.

Physical Development

• Puberty- sexual maturation; end of childhood when reproduction is possible

• Hormones trigger internal and external changes.
