1.0 Introduction
The Green Building Initiative® (GBI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the design and management
of sustainable facilities. GBI is the owner of numerous trademarks, service marks and logos, including but
not limited to numerous Green Globes® word marks and logo marks, and Green Building Initiative® word
marks and logo marks. The trademarks, service marks and logos owned by GBI are hereinafter referred to
collectively as the “GBI Marks” and individually as a “GBI Mark.”
This Graphics Standards Guide (this “Document”) governs use of all GBI Marks by all parties and shall also
be used as a reference for marketing and communications materials. This Document is intended to ensure
that the means in which the Green Building Initiative programs and services are communicated, and how
all GBI Marks are used, are consistent for all users. The consistent use of all GBI Marks (including without
limitation all Green Globes® marks and Green Building Initiative® marks) is crucial to maintaining their
value and strength. Thank you for helping us in protecting all of our GBI Marks and their display.
1.1 Our Mission
The Green Building Initiative (GBI) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to
accelerate the adoption of building practices that result in energy-efficient, healthier
and environmentally sustainable buildings by promoting credible and practical green
building approaches for commercial construction.
1.2 Scope of this Document; Conditions of Use of GBI Marks
This Document sets forth GBI’s rules for all use of, or references to, all GBI Marks. The instructions and
restrictions set forth in this Document describe the permitted manner in which GBI Marks are to be used
and displayed in collateral material, on websites or in any other format.
This Document does not grant (and shall not be construed as granting) any person, company or other
entity any right, title or interest in, or any right or license to use, any of GBI Marks. Any such right
(if it exists at all) must be expressly granted pursuant to a separate, written agreement signed by GBI,
including without limitation pursuant to GBI’s Green Globes Assessment Services Agreement
(such agreements are hereinafter collectively referred to the “Separate License Agreement(s)”).
A party’s right to use any GBI Marks under any of the Separate License Agreements is expressly
conditioned upon such party’s continued compliance with its applicable Separate License Agreement
and with its continued compliance with all of the terms and conditions of this Document
(as it may be amended).
GBI reserves the right to modify this Document from time to time, and at any time, as it deems necessary.
All users of any GBI Marks will be bound to comply with the updated Document once GBI issues its
updated Document and provides notice of the same via its GBI website.
Green Globes, GPC + GBI | Graphic Standards Guide
1.3 Proper Trademark Symbol or Designation of Rights Must Be Used with all GBI Marks; Use of Abbreviations
The appropriate trademark symbol or designation of rights (namely, either the ® symbol or the TM
symbol) must always be applied to the GBI Marks in accordance with the current list of GBI Marks either
as set forth in this Document in Section 2 below (as may be updated from time to time) or as otherwise
provided by GBI.
The ® symbol designation is used with those GBI Marks that have been registered with the United States
Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). The “TM” designation is used with those GBI Marks that, while not
yet registered, are still trademarks owned by GBI.
GBI Marks should not be displayed in a size so small that any design feature of the appropriate
trademark symbol or designation of rights (namely, either the ® symbol or the TM symbol) is lost or
is difficult to read.
REGISTERED TRADEMARK ® USAGE
The Registered Trademark ® symbol must always be used with those GBI Marks that have been registered
with the USPTO. Those GBI Marks in Section 2 which contain the ® symbol have been registered with the
USPTO and, thus, the ® symbol must always be used with those particular GBI Marks.
When using the “Green Globes® mark and/or the Green Building Initiative® mark, the ® symbol should
be used at least in the first instance. Any additional written instances of either mark within the document
does not necessarily require the ® symbol. Please use the “superscript” version of the ® when used
alongside the name.
USE OF ABBREVIATION
The first written instance of the Green Building Initiative® mark should always be complete and may
follow with the GBI acronym. For example: The Green Building Initiative® (GBITM). Any subsequent written
instances can use the GBITM acronym. The Green Globes® mark is never to be abbreviated
under any circumstance. The professional certifications for: Green Globes Professional™, Green Globes
Assessor™ and Guiding Principles Compliance Professional™ can be abbreviated to GGP, GGA and GPCP
only when using the logo or on the second written instance of the certification title.
When they are being written out, the TM should be used in the first instance.
1.4 Additional Conditions on the Use of the GBI Marks
The appropriate trademark symbol or designation of rights (namely, either the ® symbol or the ™ symbol)
must always be applied to the GBI Marks in accordance with the current list of GBI Marks either as
set forth in this Document in Section 2 below (as may be updated from time to time) or as
otherwise provided by GBI.
page 4Green Globes, GPC + GBI | Graphic Standards Guide
GBI Marks may not appear in or as part of the name, trademark, service mark or logo of any company or
organization other than The Green Building Initiative itself.
Users of GBI Marks must take particular care not to adopt any name, trademark, service mark or log that is
confusingly similar to any of the GBI Marks. No GBI Mark may appear in the descriptions of goods or
services used in any application to register a trademark or a service mark.
GBI Marks may not appear in or as part of an internet domain name.
GBI Marks shall not be combined with any other feature, including other marks, word, graphics, photos,
slogans, numbers, design features, or symbols. GBI Marks may not be used as a design feature on any of
your material.
Users of GBI Marks may not alter, cut apart, separate, or otherwise distort any GBI Mark in perspective or
appearance, except as otherwise authorized herein. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, users
may not create, or use, any variations, alterations or distortions of any GBI Mark in any manner, including
without limitation the following types of variations: (i) phonetic equivalents; (ii) abbreviations; or (iii)
foreign language equivalents.
GBI Marks may not appear in or as part of any name of your building, any of your services, any product
you may provide, or any tagline for any of the above. For example, “ABC Company” may not use the
following for a service it provides: “ABC Company’s GBI Service”.
GBI Marks should not be used in any manner which is likely to confuse the public or mislead the public into
believing that the activities of a third party are those of The Green Building Initiative itself. By way of
example only, GBI Marks may not appear as part of the name of a conference that is not sponsored
directly by The Green Building Initiative.
GBI Marks may not be used in any manner which is likely to confuse the public or misleads the public
in believing that a closer relationship exists between you and The Green Building Initiative than actually
exists by contract. GBI Marks must be used exactly as they are shown in this Document.
No other uses are permitted.

2.2 Tagline Usage
The Green Globes specific tagline “A Smarter Alternative to LEED®” can be used in some applications
with the Green Globes logo. Both a horizontal and vertically stacked option are available. The
“Support Application” of the tagline can also be used on it’s own, but should still appear in close
visual connection to the Green Globes logo.
Additionally, an all upper-case “Hero Application” of the tagline can be used where the tagline
statement will be the key focal point. (example: the tradeshow banner)

2.3 Logo Clearspace
To ensure their integrity and visibility, the Green Globes and GBI logos should be kept clear of
competing text, images and graphics. Both logos must be surrounded on all sides by adequate
clearspace.
A special exception to this rule can be applied to the “Notched” version of the Green Globes logo,
where the logo is intended to overlap an image (as used in the Project Profiles).
The examples below outline the minimum clearspace needed for each logo.

3.0 Color Palette
Consistent color usage across all touchpoints is vital to the integrity of our brand. Below are approved
color formula variations for print and digital formats. No other color specifications should be used
unless dictated by special circumstances.
4.0 Corporate Fonts
Typography plays an important role in defining our brand identity. Together with the logo and colors,
typography helps to establish the consistency of the identity on website, tradeshows, case studies,
publications, presentations, etc.
Gotham and Avenir are the official font families for Green Globes and GBI. These typefaces are to be
used by designers, inhouse designers, agencies, vendors and suppliers to create identity materials,
such as stationery, brochures, tradeshows, etc. That said, it is not necessary that all internal employees
have these fonts, as they are not required in corporate emails or Word documents.
GOTHAM - (in various weights) is used for headlines, subheads and body copy in various marketing
materials, tradeshow banners, project profiles, etc. (Gotham has been used in this document.)
Gotham Light / Gotham Roman / Gotham Medium / Gotham Black
AVENIR - (in various weights) has been used for GPC Certification logos, etc. It is not to be used for
any other applications.
Avenir Light / Avenir Roman / Avenir Medium / Avenir Black
ARIAL can be used as a substitute default font for for Word and Powerpoint documents, etc.

GREEN GLOBES SURVEYS
We no longer have subscriptions, we have project registration.
ANALOGY: Green Globes Project Dashboard is the book title and the surveys are the chapters.
•When referring to the “book” (previously evaluation) that contains the series of NC survey’s -
we now refer to it as the “Dashboard”
Since the survey’s are named documents, they should always be italicized when written.

Correct usage:
•“It costs $1000 to register your Green Globes NC project.”
•“The Green Globes Project Dashboard contains the following three surveys: Pre-Design,
Schematic Design, and Post-Construction."
DESIGN CONSTRUCTION PHASES
When referring to design construction phases they are correctly written as:
pre-design and post-construction
All buildings and assets are referred to as “projects” to customers. Multiple buildings on a
campus or for the same company in multiple cities are called a “project portfolio” and each
individual building is referred to as XYZ project.
If you are using these words in reference to a document, then it becomes the title of a
document and should be capitalized and italicized.
Correct usage example:
“The Green Globes Project Dashboard contains the following three surveys: Pre-Design,
Schematic Design, and Post-Construction."
USE OF THE GREEN GLOBES LOGO - Users who have participated in the development of a new
building or that are involved with the management of an existing building that has been Green Globes
rated (including third-party certification) may include a Green Globes logo in appropriate marketing
materials (brochures, print ads, etc.). You may use this official logo or one that represents the specific
number of Globes that your building received. (See page 4)
8.1 Green Globes Professional Certification
PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATIONS- The Green Building Initiative has created a national professional
certification program to support the adoption and growth of Green Globes.
Personnel credentials distinguish those who are formally trained in promoting, managing, consulting or
certifying Green Globes projects. Green Globes Professionals (GGP) are expert users of the program;
Green Globes Assessors (GGA) are authorized by the GBI to perform third-party assessments for both
Green Globes and Guiding Principles Compliance that lead to a building certification.
GREEN GLOBES PERSONNEL CERTIFICATION LOGOS AND MARKS - Certified Green Globes
Professionals or Green Globes Assessors may use the acronym GGP or GGA behind their names or as
initials on business cards. Green Globes Professional or Green Globes Assessor logos can be used on
collateral materials (such as brochures), letterhead or on a website. In the event that an individual’s
certification expires or is terminated, logos and other designations may no longer be used.
GGP AND GGA INITIALS - GGP and GGA initials may be used in lieu of the official certification
logos. The official font style of the initials is Avenir in Dark Blue caps:

compliance with the Guiding Principles, which is required by presidential Executive Order 13514.
CERTIFICATION GUIDELINES – Guiding Principles Compliance program users and building owners are
strictly prohibited from featuring the Guiding Principles Compliance program logo and/or subsequent
rating logos, as well as claiming their development of a Guiding Principles Compliance rated building,
unless their actions are pre-approved by the Green Building Initiative.
Buildings with a complete and fully paid GBI Guiding Principles Compliance third-party verification
(review of documentation and on-site assessment) may be identified as Guiding Principles
Compliance rated buildings at their specific achievement level. Certification rating levels may be two
