THE RELIGION OF THE GREEKS

The religion of the ancient Greeks was polytheistic. The gods each had a sphere of influence (eg poseidon on the sea.) Or adherence to a locality (eg Athena to Athens), often both.

To the rest of the twelve great Olympian gods, there were later incorporations of Eastern deities, especially females such as Cibeles and Isis, who acquired great frequency.

In Roman mythology was worshiped with the name of Minerva.

Never married or had lovers, maintaining a perpetual virginity.

She was the best in the war, nor could Ares defeat her.

Was patron of many cities but above all of Athens.

She also protects many heroes and other mythical figures.

The precious olive gift of Athens to the cities thanks to which managed to frustrate the aspirations of its rival Poseidon turned Athens into the indisputable lady of Attica.

Was represented as a majestic goddess of serene and severe beauty; The glittering gaze of his legendary eyes reminds the owl, his favorite animal, whom he often sees often swear on his shoulder or in his hand.

Myth about the birth of Athena. Zeus decide to swallow his beloved

Metis ("Wisdom") because they announce that after the first child is born, the goddess will become pregnant whit a son who will dethrone Zeus. After a time, Zeus suffers terrible headaches. The divine blacksmith Hephaestus, opens the skull and there comes fully armed Athena.
