• In 1867 some of the colonies of British North America (BNA) joined together in Confederation.

• This union was the creation of the country we now live in, Canada.

• However, this union didn’t happen right away and it took a great many years to accomplish.

• One by one colonies joined, leading to our present country.

• By 1864 all the colonies in BNA had achieved Responsible Government.

• But leaders began to think beyond this and pondered the future of the colonies.

• BNA lost their free-trade status with British and this ended up costing them money!

• At the same time the USA continued to grow and become stronger.

– Would the colonies make more money and get more political power on its own…

– OR

– Would the colonies do best if they all worked together?
