The Effects of Poor Sleep from 2012 - 2013

• 5 hours sleep every 5 consecutive nights = 2LB’s weight gain

• 5 hours sleep per night puts you in the top 20th percentile for burnout

• Being in the top 20th percentile for burnout will leave you with a 79% risk of a

heart attack

• 35% of UK companies have now attributed burnout to being a major cause in

underperformance…

• That’s a 20% increase since 2012

We simply cannot ignore the facts

Insomnia and Sleep Deprivation – Knowing the Difference

There is a difference between Insomnia and Sleep Deprivation.

Insomnia is a symptom of a sleep disorder. Insomnia is the persistent difficulty in

falling asleep, or staying asleep, despite the opportunity. It is the inability to sleep

adequately.

Sleep Deprivation on the other hand is a disorder characterised by failure to sleep

for sufficient periods of time. This is often a gradual decline in the hours of sleep

achieved.

Sleep Architecture and the Stages of Sleep

DAY 3 – SLEEP

There are several different stages of sleep. During the hours that we are asleep, our body falls into a deep sleep, known as ‘Rapid eye movement’. This is shown

on the graph above. This is the state in which you are most likely to dream.

This state is repeated roughly every 90 minutes.

Body Physiology

• The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) is responsible for controlling the way your body behaves

• It is comprised of two key elements:- Sympathetic- Parasympathetic

All of which plays a role in keeping you fit and healthy.

Body Physiology

•Stress and strain are not the same thing

•Stress is a natural bodily function exhibited in all animals, a trait which reverts thousands of years

• The body is conditioned to react to stress, but then to revert to normality once again

• Strain, on the other hand, is the result of prolonged stress over several days, compounding eventually in burnout

• It take weeks, months and in some cases years to fully recover from strain

Picture this analogy

•A rubber band is continually pulled and, upon being released, recoils to its original state

•However, continued and sustained force, pulling it, will eventually lead to it loosening, or even snapping

•The same is true of the human body.
