Abu Dhabi, UAE PopulationAbu Dhabi is the largest and most populated of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates, with over 80% of its landmass. The emirate's population, now over 1.6 million, is expected to reach 3 million by 2030. Across the UAE, Emirati citizens make up nearly 20% of the total population; the other 80% are expatriates from Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe and North America.

Local timeThe UAE is four hours ahead of UTC (Co-ordinated Universal Time - formerly known as GMT) and there is no daylight saving. Hence, when it is 12.00 midday in Abu Dhabi, it is 3am in New York, 8am in London, 10 am in Johannesburg, 1.30pm in New Delhi, and 6pm in Sydney (not allowing for any summer time saving in those countries).

Social & business hoursGenerally speaking, government departments, embassies and consulates work from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Embassies and consulates may designate specific times of day for processing certain requests (such as passport applications) so always call before you visit. The Islamic holy day is Friday and most organizations operate a Friday / Saturday weekend. Shops and visitor attractions are open on both days, though usually towards the end of the day or in the early evening on Fridays.

During the holy month of Ramadan shops often change their hours by closing during the day, re-opening an hour or two after sunset, and staying open later at night. Food outlets and restau-rants generally remain closed or offer takeaway services only during the day and then open up for after sunset. Getting aroundAbu Dhabi has a well-planned road system and getting around Abu Dhabi is easy. A new interac-tive map initiative, www.darb.ae, provides useful information on travel and transport in the emirate. People often rely on landmarks to give directions.

Taxis are reasonably priced and plentiful and can be flagged down at the roadside or booked by phone through the TransAD hotline: 600 535353. Visitors who choose to rent a vehicle will find all major car rental companies in Abu Dhabi, plus a few extra. Abu Dhabi’s modern air-conditioned buses operate round-the-clock. The service is easy to use, with passengers hopping in and out of any bus by placing a one Dirham coin in the collection box next to the driver.

Silver SponsorRuslan International

In July 2006, Antonov Airlines and Volga-Dnepr Airlines put their heads together to form 'Ruslan International' - the heavy air cargo charter specialists.

Now offering a combined fleet of 17 Antonov An124-100 aircraft and twice the expertise in technical, commercial and operational solutions, Ruslan International is capable of rising to any outsize or heavy air cargo challenge.

Following the end of Antonov Airlines’ previous marketing arrangement, both decided to streamline their approach to fleet management. Ruslan International became a joint marketing enterprise with the aim of providing the most efficient utilization of both fleets.Although both airlines retain their own separate and distinct identities, both decided to evolve their commercial and operational structures in order to achieve the greatest efficiency for their customers.

The cooperation was driven by the need to serve the ad-hoc charter market, as well as existing long-term contracts which required the allocation of a significant portion of both carriers’ fleet.

Ruslan International was formed after the successful implementation of “Ruslan Salis” in February 2006 – a joint project that now provides NATO with a dedicated aircraft from each fleet.

The concept of Ruslan International now allows further efficiency by combining spare parts, loading equipment and the efforts of both airlines to restart production of the An124, thus ensur-ing the future availability of this unique aircraft.
