Team Mission StatementWe are a group HR majors at the University of

Massachusetts Dartmouth who are looking to educate the community by reaching out to New Bedford students. Using our skills and education effectively, we will strive to spread recycling awareness and make a lasting impression. We will educate elementary students on how to correctly recycle, while creating a fun educational environment they will enjoy learning in. Our overall mission is to leave a lasting impression on the students which will be brought home with them, therefore encouraging recycling at home.

Green Pirates Operating Principles

Team members will attend all meetings, and will contact the group 24 hours in advanced (email, or text) when they can not make a meeting

Team members will work to the best of their abilities.

Work is divided up evenly Individual tasks are delegated fairlyEach group members opinions will be valued

and respected

Service to community partners

The Green Pirates worked with the Taylor elementary school. We focused on working with the fifth graders. To spread the word on recycling and find out what the students learned from us, they then presented their art project (ARD event 2) to the 1st graders.

ARD Event #1

Monday, November 5th

A lesson was given on recycling along with a post quiz to see what the 5th graders retained.

ARD Event #2

Wednesday, November 7th

Plastic Bag Art Project!

ARD Final Event

Monday, November 19th

Beach Clean up!

Community InvolvementUmass Dartmouth groups were

notified of our beach cleanup. The green pirates gained valuable

partnerships with both Stop & Shop, Lynn Coish, and the New Bedford and Dartmouth Recycling Coordinator Marissa Perez-Dormitizer

Recycling Awareness, Education and Behavior

The art projects were not only presented to the 1st graders but will also be hung up for the rest of the school year to remind the students of what they learned during our time there

The second day of teaching, one girl explained to us how she told her mother about what she had learned in school that day and her mother proceeded to create a chart that was hung on their refrigerator

38 applications for blue bins were given to the students and 5 students brought them back.

SustainabilityAlong with the idea of recycling

the right items and throwing away the rest, we wanted to promote sustainability to our students

We received 38 reusable bags donated to us from Stop&Shop

CreativityWe had the fifth graders make a replica of

the poster that Marissa has in her office, which shows why it is dangerous if a plastic bag ends up in the ocean

During this groups had to draw the animal and somehow incorporate the bag on it to show how dangerous plastic bags are for a diverse amount of sea animals.

Important teamwork lessons learned

Voicing your opinion during a group meeting Realizing each others strengths and weaknesses

will help the group work together and complete tasks

Each member of the team needs to do their work and be reliable. The group as a whole needs to trust that individual member will do their share and get their tasks done efficiently and on time

Being open to other team members’ suggestion allows for new and creative ideas

The Green Pirates succeeded even through our setbacks we encountered:

Hannigan School Issues Market Basket Total School Involvement

Thank you Taylor School!
