Glimpses of Goonj’s work for the riot affected in Muzaffarnagar/Shamli camps

Rahat- Muzaffarnagar riots

By

Riots unleashed unimaginable horror on people and the aftermath was equally shocking…

For many, life changed overnight Hundreds of tents, broken families, no livelihood, massive displacement and severe winters..

Goonj first assessed the ground realities by meeting the localsWe provided immediate relief in terms of woolens, clothing, sanitary napkins, toys, shoes etc. in 13 camps.

Our focus was to work on gap areas in terms of people and geographical areas.

Around 6 trucks of material reached different relief camps. Goonj team members stayed in the area and reached people with local volunteers.

Main Goonj material given at the campsincluded- 200 bags of woolens with a focus on kids, 1500 blankets and quilts, 5000 pieces of utensils,

650 good quality tarpaulins, 1100 packs of Goonj’s MY Pad cloth sanitary pads apart from a large quantity of toys, basic books and 2400 pairs of new shoes..

Goonj material also included stationary, outdoor games, pram, big toys, hair oil, soap, notebooks, lunch box, water bottles, candles, biscuits etc.

Shoes brought on smiles for children and helped keep them warm…

Goonj’s Temporary Toy Centers helped kids over come the trauma of riots at Madarsa Camp & Village Bhoora

Even if for a brief while, these centers helped kids to reclaim their childhood and find their playmates..

Over 650 good quality tarpaulins replaced some of those tattered cloth/plastic tents, the only shelter for many..

Next steps…

• First phase of our work in the riot affected areas has just gotten over. • We reached out about 6 trucks of essential material like woolens, utensils, shoes, tarpaulins and sanitary pads.• Any long- term rehabilitation plan execution can not be planned right now due to rapid changes and uncertainties in the field in terms of migration, camps being dismantled and upcoming elections. Camps scenario at Muzzaffarnagar/Shamli is very unpredictable right now.

Goonj is keen to support in any way with the resources available at our end. Please connect us with any committed groups working with riot affected communities or other poor communities in Uttar Pradesh. We are looking for organizations who have a

strong connect in the area and who need material support.
