GLASS

INTRODUCTION

Google Glass is a wearable computer with an optical head-mounted display (OHMD) that is being developed by Google in the Project Glass research and development project, with a mission of producing a mass-market ubiquitous computer.

Project Glass is a research and development

program by Google to develop an augmented reality Head-Mounted Display (HMD). The intended purpose of Project Glass products would be the hands-free displaying of information currently available to most smartphone users, and allowing for interaction with the Internet via natural language voice commands

GLASS

The Google Glasses can use a 4G cell connection to pull in information from Google’s mountain of data and display info about the real world in augmented reality on the lens in front of your eye.

Like smartphones and tablets, the glasses will be equipped with GPS and motion sensors. They will also contain a camera and audio inputs and outputs.

These glasses will have the combined features of virtual reality and augmented reality.

GLASS

Virtual reality is a term that applies to computer-simulated environments that can simulate physical presence in places in the real world, as well as in imaginary worlds.

Virtual reality is often used to describe a wide variety of applications commonly associated with immersive, highly visual, 3D environments.

Virtual Reality (VR)

GLASS

It is related to a more general concept called mediated reality, in which a view of reality is modified (possibly even diminished rather than augmented) by a computer.

GLASS

DEVELOPMENTGlass is being developed by

Google X, which has worked on other futuristic technologies such as driverless cars.

The project was announced on Google+ by Project Glass lead Babak Parviz , an electrical engineer who has also worked on putting displays into contact lenses.

Google has patented the design of Project Glass. Thad Starner , an augmented reality expert, is a technical lead/manager on the project.

TECHNOLOGIES USED

Wearable Computing Ambient Intelligence Smart Clothing Eye Tap Technology Smart Grid Technology 4G Technology Android Technology

GLASS

Wearable ComputingWearable computers, also known as

body-borne computers are miniature electronic devices that are worn by the bearer under, with or on top of clothing.

One of the main features of a wearable computer is consistency. There is a constant interaction between the computer and user, i.e. there is no need to turn the device on or off.

GLASS

Another feature is the ability to multi-task. It is not necessary to stop what you are doing to use the device; it is augmented into all other actions.

GLASS

Ambient IntelligenceElectronic environments that are sensitive and responsive to the presence of people.

Devices work in concert to support people in carrying out their everyday life activities.

The technology disappears into our surroundings until only the user interface remains perceivable by users.

GLASS

Smart Clothing

It is a combination of new fabric technology and digital technology.

The clothing is made with new signal-transfer fabric technology installed with digital devices.

GLASS

Eye Tap TechnologyEye Tap is a device that is worn in front of the eye that acts as a eye to record the scene available to the eye as well as a display.

Eye Tap intakes the world around it and augments the image the user sees allowing it to overlay computer-generated data over top of the normal world the user would perceive.

GLASS

Smart Grid Technology

Smart grid is an electrical grid that uses information and communications technologies to gather and act on information about the behaviour of suppliers and consumers, in an automated fashion.

It improves the efficiency, reliability,

economics, and sustainability of the production and distribution of electricity.

GLASS

4G Technology

4G is the fourth generation of cell phone mobile communication standards.

This system provides mobile ultra broadband Internet access with data rates of 300Mbps in mobility to 1Gbps while stationary.

The data speed can make the device run about its purpose.

GLASS

Android Technology

Android is a Linux-based operating for mobile devices such as smart phones and tablet computers, developed by Google in conjunction with the Open handset Alliance

GLASS

Video Display

Its features with the small video display that is used to display the pop up hands free information.

GLASS

Camera

It has a front facing video camera with which photos and videos can be taken in a glimpse.

GLASS

Speaker

Google glasses are designed to be hands free wearable device that can be used to make or receive calls too. So a speaker is also designed by the ear.

GLASS

A single button on the side of the frame sophisticates the glasses to work with the physical touch input. It can be used in multi-purposeful ways and it acts according to the context.

GLASS

Microphone

A microphone is also put in, that can take the voice commands of the wearer of user. This microphone is also used for having telephonic communication.

Voice Activation

Other than the touchpad, Google Glass can be controlled using "voice actions". To activate Glass, wearers tilt their heads 30° upward (which can be altered for preference) or tap the touchpad, and say "O.K., Glass." Once Glass is activated, wearers can say an action, such as "Take a picture", "Record a video", "Hangout with [person/Google+ circle]", "Google 'What year was Wikipedia founded?'", "Give me directions to the Eiffel Tower", and "Send a message to John"(many of these commands can be seen in a product video released in February 2013). For search results that are read back to the user, the voice response is relayed using bone conduction through a transducer that sits beside the ear, thereby rendering the sound almost inaudible to other people.

GLASS

GLASS

CPU

It includes a dual-core TI OMAP 4430 processor, the same CPU as the original Kindle Fire and DROID RAZR.

GLASS

Battery

It uses Lithium Polymer battery (2.1 Wh ).

GLASS

Touchpad

A touchpad is located on the side of Google Glass, allowing users to control the device by swiping through a timeline-like interface displayed on the screen. Sliding backward shows current events, such as weather, and sliding forward shows past events, such as phone calls, photos, circle updates, etc.

FEATURESRecord videos, take pictures

Just say the word and Google Glass will take a picture or record a video – you will never have to touch the hardware. The photos and videos will be stored on the 4GB flash memory of the device, and can also be shared on social networking websites or emailed.

GLASS

Show messages

Google Glass will show you text messages as well as emails you receive and allow you to reply to them via voice commands.

GLASS

Find information

If you are in the habit of Googling things a lot, you will find that your task has been made easier by the new Glass. You simply need to ask a question and the device will pull the answer from the internet.

GLASS

Show maps

The widely used Google Maps are integrated into Glass, so that users will be able to chart the course of their journey or look up locations or establishments via voice commands.

GLASS

Live video sharing

Google Glass can show the world what you are seeing – live! If you are attending a family function, your child’s school play or a concert, you can share the feed with your friends and family in real-time and make them a part of the experience.

GLASS

Integrates Google Now

Google Now, the digital voice assistant from the search giant, has been integrated in this device. It will keep track of your daily habits, such as when you leave for office or the route you take. It will give you alternate routes if there is traffic on the way or give you weather updates periodically, among various other functions.
