Welcome to the very rst issue of GMAG the Green Schools very
rst magazine created to showcase the awesome world of Green
School students.
What youre about to see is the result of a collaboration between
a group of students from the Green School and a group of college
students from Parsons The New School for Design who have been
working hard to blaze the trail to start something new, something
that represents the Green School and its mission. So whats the
deal with Gmag? Gmag is a place for Green students to represent
themselves, to tell the world what they love, what they hate, what
they do or what they want to do. Gmag is a way for Green students
to show off, to strut their stuff, to get their voices heard. This is the
rst issue so its not perfect yet, but part of the vision is for this to
be a project that will continue, that will grow legs and start running
and get bigger and better and have more of what you want to see.
So check it out, and if you want to take part, let us know! And
remember, the nal product is just one aspect of the project. The
process of creating is a fun way to learn new skills and will look
GREAT on a college resume. So we hope you like it, and if you think
you could do it better, come join us and prove it!
welcome

1. I cant afford it.While some kids have their education paid for by
their families, a lot of people do it on their own,and most students get nancial aid to help pay
for college. Because most aid is based on need,
the less money you have, the more aid you might
get. Plus, Obama doesnt want anyone going
broke to get an education, so its easier than
ever to pay back loans over the long run. Dont
let this excuse hold you back! College can seem
expensive, but remember that its an investment
youre making in yourself that will serve you for the
rest of your life.
2. Nobody in my family has ever gone.
Being rst can be hard, for sure. Maybe your family
thinks its a waste of time or money, but are you gonna
let that stop you from investing in your future? Think of
it this way being rst is likely to be a source of pride,
for you and for your family. Feel like you have to stay
home and help take care of your family? When youthink about it, is it possible that you would be helping
your family in a much bigger way by investing in your
own future?
3. I dont know what I want to do with my life.
Join the crowd! Hardly anyone knows what they want to do at this age.
Thousands of college freshmen havent decided on a major or on a career, but
No matter where life leads you, it can only help you to have a college education.
People who go to college not only expand their horizons and have more
opportunities available to them, but they also end up earning more money!
Sometimes it seems so far away, maybe it feels like college just isnt for youbut
then again, why not? There are some pretty common reasons that a lot of people
dont pursue a college degree, and most of them are pretty weak
Why Not Go to College?
8/9/2019 Gmag Zine Final Update 1
27/56
that doesnt stop them from diving in and pursuing a higher education. The cool thing
about college is that it gives you the opportunity to learn more about whats out there,
and just because you get a degree in one thing doesnt mean you wont end up doing
something else. College exposes you to a variety of academic subjects, people, and new
perspectives, which ultimately serves you and your evolution as a person. Dont stay
limited by what you know!
4. College will be too hard for me.
A lot of students think college will be too hard for them, but like
a lot of different things its a lot easier to handle than you might
expect. Keep in mind, all colleges offer tutoring and student
support. College is meant to be a challenge that makes you
stronger! You can handle it if you believe you can, just
like anything else in life.
5. I just wont ft in.
Most colleges have students from many
backgrounds, which means that youll get to meet all
sorts of new people that you might never have
been exposed to if you stayed in your comfort
zone of what youre used to. To get an idea
of what to expect, explore colleges with online
search engines, or better yet, visit in person. Be
sure to ask about what kinds of differnet peoplemake up the student body, and if they have clubs
and activities that youre interested in joining.
Theres always a lot going on campus, and you
can denitely nd something that you like, you just
gotta look for it.
What else? ...
It Doesnt Have to Be a Four-Year College
If youre not sure about college, or which college, consider
attending a community college. Community colleges are public,
two-year schools that provide a great education, whether youre
considering an associates degree, a certicate program, technical
training, or plan to continue your studies at a four-year college. Whether
you go to the best school in the country or the local community college, an
education is a smart investment of time and money.

The Process Behind GMAGEver wonder how this magazine came to be?
FIRST STEP: Meeting our Green Partners
This step of the process was by far the most important step.
We very much needed the help of Greens input and opinions to
guide us in the right direction to take this project. Also with the
help of Ben we got to get a better feel what it was like to be a
student at Green. After meeting with the students we had
determined what our mission was.
8/9/2019 Gmag Zine Final Update 1
45/56
MISSION: to create something that willhelp the Green School gain more recognition.
SECOND STEP: Brainstorming
Once we had decided the magazine was the best way for us
ulll our mission we began laying out the format to make thiswebsite a digtial zine available online. We wrote down any ideas
hat came to mind. Once we had everything written down we
egan editing our ideas into ones that thought could actually
urn into something great!
8/9/2019 Gmag Zine Final Update 1
46/56
THIRD STEP: Presenting our ideas to Green
We had an idea in our head what the students at Green would enjoy
seeing as content in the magazine, but to know the real truth we had
to ask them! We created a presentation that we would show them
when they came to visit Parsons. They had no idea yet what we had
been producing so it was our job to lay all of our ideas out to them
and allow them to be our critics.
8/9/2019 Gmag Zine Final Update 1
47/56
FOURTH STEP: Collaborating with Green
Luckily after proposing the idea of the magazine we recieved a large
amount of positive feedback. So now that we knew the magazine had
serious potential we asked them to show us what there ideal
magazine would look like. What would the topics be? Who would it
feature? Basically they were in control of creating the content. The
Green Group divided into 3 teams and created collages to show what
there ideal magazine would feature.
8/9/2019 Gmag Zine Final Update 1
48/56
FIFTH STEP: Production
Now it was our job to use the skills weve learned at Parsons to
bring the Green students inspiration to life. We began creating
spreads for the magazine digitally. We divided the spreads betwe
all the Parsons students based on our own personal intrests.
And worked closely with the Green students to continue getting
feedback if what we created was to their liking. We were able to
communicate between the two groups by posting to the blong. A
the Green and Parsons students had access to posting to this blo
and it allowed us to be in touch throughout the week.
8/9/2019 Gmag Zine Final Update 1
49/56
SIXTH STEP: Prepare for the Launch Party
To get the word out to the Green Students not involved with the
project we began preparing for a launch party. This party would
give a preview of GMAG and showcase all of the hard work from
Green and Parsons students. We began creating t-shirts, buttons
and stickers to get people excited and want to learn more about
what we had been working on for the past few months!
