At the beginning of construction documentation I was
brought in to support the Senior Interior Designer. Initially I
was responsible for picking up 'redlines' and refining the
interior finishes, furniture, furniture plans, schedules, and
preparing the final finish presentation board. My
responsibilities expanded to performing 'clash detection' for
the architectural, equipment, and life safety reflected ceiling
plans. I executed the CAD changes necessary to meet the
Lab's functional requirements. And updated the engineer’s
backgrounds.

Pennsylvania Hospital, our nation’s first hospital, and a
leading teaching and clinical research institution, serves
Philadelphians with a wide array of high quality diagnostic
and therapeutic medical services.
Ballinger ‘s architects and interior designers worked with the
hospital’s clinical staff and facilities department to design a
three phase, 32 bay, Emergency Department renovation and
expansion, including wayfinding and environmental graphics
consultation. Teamed with an architect and lead Interior
designer, I coordinated interiors construction documentation.
I was solely responsible for all furniture and wall mounted
board and holder locations and specifications, including
signage and environmental graphics.

One of the ways Ballinger’s studio-wide knowledge base and expertise served our clients, was by being able to forecast their needs. In preparation for holding meetings with the URMC client groups, I
supported the project team as a Space Programmer, by formulating generic room data sheets containing established requirements for their required space types.
These sheets, detailing MEP, equipment, and furniture requirements, served to facilitate discussions to determine practical requirements and foster in-depth evaluations of the areas, to ensure that all the
necessary functional requirements and the client's needs were understood , documented, and met.

Pei Cobb Freed & Partners was hired by New York Presbyterian Hospital
(NYP) to design the premier half of the Greenberg Building’s, 14th floor,
‘pavilion’ nursing unit
Concurrently Ballinger’s Interiors Group was designing the hospital’s campus-
wide standard interior upgrades. NYP asked Ballinger to design the other half
of the 14th floor to reflect the essence of the top quality, hospitality-like finishes
of Pei Cobb Freed’s design, at an equivalent budget and quality to the
remainder of the campus upgrades.
Lead by Laura Morris, IIDA, AAHID, LEED AP, I formulated the total interior
design concept for the other half of the nursing unit—including Lounges and
Bariatric Rooms. I assembled both project’s materials and developed a hybrid
scheme. Additionally I performed general construction documentation
refinements; researched, selected, and prepared the FF&E plans and
specifications, and assisted the client through the procurement of products.

Teamed with Robert Angstadt, AIA to
resurrect and perform construction
administration on a Jennifer Mishkin, IIDA,
LEED AP designed project that had been
tied up in legalities for two years. Many
finishes were discontinued. I reselected,
documented, updated finish boards, and
disseminated changes--seeing the project
through completion.

Healthcare Wayfinding,
Weill Cornell Medical Center,
Weill Greenberg Center, 1-15 Fl.
71st & York Ave., NY, NY
Weill Greenberg Center ‘s interior was the winner of
Interior Design Magazine’s Best of Healthcare
2007. Ballinger designed the interiors, Polshek was
the architect , Cloud Gehshan designed the
wayfinding graphics and I master planned,
coordinated and implemented the room and
informational signage—utilizing their graphic genome
and interviewing the clients to fully understand and
sign the 330,000 SF ‘spa-like,’ advanced clinical,
teaching, and research, healthcare institution.
The project involved coordinating the Life Safety,
Wayfinding, and Environmental Graphics with urbane
interior design--including master planning corridor,
room numbers, and nomenclature development. The
interior package contained 3,360 high quality, user-
modifiable, signs at an installed signage construction
cost of $400,000.
Signing the 15 story facility and the neighboring
Materials Handling Building, involved many different
stakeholders and disciplines including: New York
Presbyterian/ Weill Cornell’s Manager of Visitor
Information, Practice Operations for Weill Cornell
Physician Organization, Cardiology / Lipids, Clinical
Skills Center, Conference Center, Dermatology,
ENT, IVF, Gastroenterology, Genome/Computational
Bio-Medicine, Multiple Sclerosis, Ophthalmology, Pain
Management, Patient Resource Center, Pediatrics
and Radiology.
The project utilized System 2/90 signage, virtual
teamwork, and an understanding that hospitality
esthetics and public relations raise the importance of
finishing touches and communication. Collaborative
forecasting reduced construction administration and
resulted in signage gracefully synchronized with the
surrounding architecture, finishes and mounted
devises.

Phases: All
Design collaborator, coordinator, scheduler, and team facilitator of the new “N
Building’s” Donor Recognition and Lobby Identity.
Facilitating content development and designing imagery for two led illuminated etched
crystal donor recognition plaques, fabricated by Wallach Glass Studio (Santa Clara,
CA), totaling $110,000. Each is mounted in a Ballinger designed cabinet, one Annigre,
the other Makore, fabricated by Boyertown Planing Mill Company (Boyertown, PA) and
assembled and installed by L & H Signs Industries (Fleetwood, PA).
The Lobby’s dimensional lettering against the limestone and aluminum extrusion coating
walls, involved finish materials research, selection , and full-scale mock-ups.

Designer /
Coordinator
Phases: All
As wayfinding project coordinator, I developed and implemented an institution-wide standardized
interior wayfinding system for a full service 650-bed medical center, including quality assurance
and execution of egress maps, smoke detector location maps and user-friendly CAD filing system
and electronic deliverables for ongoing maintenance.
The project scope included the addition of an award winning 7 story tower and its cross-campus
travel via interconnecting corridors. “N Building”, totaling 2,340,000 sf., houses two stories
dedicated to a cancer and heart center (65,000 sf.), and a 94-bed emergency/trauma department
(55,000 sf, ).
Interconnecting Buildings: A, B, C, D, E, G, H, L, N & R.
Separate Buildings: DOB, J, K, M, P, U & all satellite clinics

The scope grew to include coordination, advancement, and facilitation of new technology in order to
design, build, and roll-out seven campus-wide Interactive Directory/Mapping kiosks. I served as design
collaborator, Project Manager, and quality assurance for the vendors’ and graphic designer’s content
and illustrations to successfully navigate the campus, floor, and quadrant maps. Project Teammates:
TTSS Interactive Products, Inc. (Rockville, MD), and Gregory Blue + Assoc. (Chester Springs, PA).
