Teachers need more time and work to adapt OER

Discussing teachers’ work on preparation and adoption of learning materials is a much more complex issue and depends on many factors. Changes to resource-based learning which are happening recently are a part of increased work time needed for teachers to create and adapt learning materials to more individualized and active use. Growing access to different resources on the internet, combined with the ongoing rollout of ICT infrastructure into educational institutions brings a lot of new challenges for

teachers. OERs are rather a solution then a cause of the problems. Though, as any new solution or device, they need some time to become easy and intuitive for people who want to work with them.

OER movement is developing very fast on new tools, database and learning opportunities for teachers and educator to implement them in their work. As the number of open resources and tools will grow, it will be easier for teachers to work with them. Also, if we want to work with complete sets of resources like e-textbook (and a lot of those are already available for many subjects in many countries) there can be no additional work.

Little to no awareness was evident after delivering the info-sharing introduction session about OER to lecturing staff in the 2 faculties at NMMU, on 2 separate campuses and occasions

Staff in several sessions, as well as in 2 x T&L Committee meeting presentations; with institutional Research Committee meetings: participants were highly motivated to understand more about OER, and expressed interest to explore the implications and processes of being more Open

Anecdotal experiences at NMMU: staff information-sharing workshops 2014/2015 –

The chief concern voiced (and repeatedly written in individual

session evaluations)

The change in practice and

effort required to adapt course material is often considered prohibitive

“Must I?” NMMU seems to present comparable responses experienced after several OER-related staff development and information sharing sessions at Unisa (2009 – 2014) as similarly conducted.

Recent* research from the USA says OER awareness is (still) low amongst educators in HE (W&F Hewlitt Foundation and Pearson)

between one third and three quarters of those surveyed (2014) classify themselves as “unaware” of OER

About yesterday’s presentation, a welcome eye-opener to all of us; it also puts the Writing Centre in a more “modern” light. OER: thumbs up!*

I definitely see potential for using the OER Writing Tool in my T&L. To make it more meaningful and practical, I would like us to spend more time on the actual OER searching part in class, this could then be enforced and followed up by means of an assignment*
