Inside and Out

The solar system consists of the sun and eight known planets and celestial bodies that orbit the sun.

The earth is the 3rd planet, 93 million miles from the sun in the solar system.

Comets are spheres covered with ice and dust that leave trails of vapor as they race through space.

Asteroids are large chunks of rocky material.

There is an asteroid belt between Jupiter and Mars.

The earth is a series of shells that surround one another.

The center of the earth consists of the core, the mantle, and the crust.

P. 28 diagram

The core is the center of the earth and is made up of iron and nickel.

The mantle surrounds the core and contains most of the earths mass.

Magma is molten rock that forms in the mantle.

The crust is the thin layer of rock at the earth’s surface.

The atmosphere surrounds the earth and consists a layer of gases.

The atmosphere contains the oxygen we breathe, protects the earth from radiation and space debris, and regulates weather and climate.

The lithosphere is solid rock and contains the crust and uppermost mantle.

The lithosphere forms the seafloor under the ocean.

The continents are part of the lithosphere.

The hydrosphere contains all the water elements on earth (seas, oceans, rivers, lakes, and water in the atmosphere).

The atmosphere, lithosphere, and hydrosphere form the biosphere.

The biosphere is the part of the earth where plants and animals live

Developed in 1912 by Alfred Wegener

States that earth was once one big supercontinent.

Slowly divided and drifted apart.
