Genre Hybridity Plenary TaskYour teacher will give you two cards. On each card will be a well-known film genre- when you put the two together, you will have a hybrid genre. With a partner, you need to create a film idea that could exist within this hybrid genre.

E.g. a Western/Disaster could be set in the Wild West, where a terrible earthquake tears apart a small town. A ragbag group including a sheriff, the town drunk and a murderous cowboy – who was perhaps, until the earthquake, the sheriff’s prisoner- must band together against the odds to rescue survivors.

You need to consider the following features:

» Where the film will be set.

» What key iconography you will use.

» Your lead characters.

» A narrative that will satisfy the demands of fans of both genres. What typical narratives could be blended?

» You may wish to consider how your film will challenge or subvert typical genre conventions.

» It would help to list characteristic features of each genre type.

Pitch your ideas to the class. Your classmates will vote as to which film they think would be the most successful with audiences.
