Introduction

Vedic astrology is the ancient, universal science of light called“jyotish” in Sanskrit, the original lan-guage of India. By recording the posi-tion and influence of the planets atthe time of birth, astrology helps de-termine one’s karma from past livesand the fulfillment of one’s potentialin this lifetime. It is also an extremelyvaluable tool in determining the propertiming of major events in one’s life sothey will meet with success instead ofdifficulty or failure. Vedic astrology offers many reme-dial methods for undoing, reducing orcircumventing the negative effects of

the karma that is indicated in the birthchart. Among them are the use ofprayers, rituals, giving in charity andplanetary gemstones. The easiestmethod is the wearing of planetarygemstones. Of all the planetary gemstone jew-elry recommended, the Navaratna(Nine Gemstone) pendant or settingis considered the best and is there-fore known as the King of Astrologi-cal Jewelry.

How doAstrological

Gemstones Work?

6

According to astrological texts, the planets influence one’s lifethrough the colored rays they radiateas gravitational, electrical, and mag-netic energy fields. Transmitted aslight waves, the colors radiated areidentical to the colors of different gemsand semi-precious stones which absorbthis energy from the various planets. The astrological potency of gemstonesis very strong because of all the ele-ments in nature, they constitute themost concentrated form of light. These planetary rays can bedrawn from the stones when they areworn on the body as jewelry, touched

7

8

regularly, or kept in close proximityin one’s environment where they canbe displayed as decorative stones orobjets d’art in the home or office. Ancient sources and scriptures fromaround the world have recognized thatgemstones emit powerful energieswhich are capable of influencing one’sfate and destiny. Effective use of se-lected gemstones can energize a personand produce positive consequences. They can also drive out negative en-ergies that may be causing physicalsickness, psychological imbalance oremotional suffering. As carriers of theplanetary rays, gems can deliver peace,

9

prosperity and happiness. They canease life’s difficulties and can awardtheir wearer with fame, good reputa-tion, power, success and fulfillment.

NavaratnAThe King of

Astrological Jewelry

12

Navaratna refers to the nine gem-stones related to the nine planets usedin Vedic astrology. Nava means ‘nine’and ratna means ‘gem’ in the Sanskritlanguage. These nine planets are theSun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter,Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. (Theselast two ‘shadowy planets’ of Vedic as-trology correspond to the ascendingand descending nodes of the Moonrespectively).

The Bearer of Good Health,Prosperity, Happiness

and Peace of Mind

13

When only one astrological gem-stone is worn, it tends to focus on aparticular planet or specific problem. When a setting of gemstones corre-sponding to the nine planets is worn,it offers extraordinary protection be-cause it can deliver the benefits of allthe nine planetary gemstones simul-taneously. The Navaratna talisman isdesigned to ward off negative ener-gies and effects and to strengthen thepositive influences that the nine plan-ets and their respective gemstonesdeliver. One can wear it in expecta-tion of good health, prosperity, in-creased happiness and peace of mind.

14

Navaratna jewelry can be madewith gems or semi-precious stones. The most important consideration isthat the stones being used are flaw-less. The different categories of stonesare not so much related to their valueand market appeal but more to theirinfluence on the body and its chemis-try, the mind and its psychology, andthe electromagnetic field that sur-rounds a person.

Historical Usesof PlanetaryGemstones

The beneficial effects of astrologi-cal gemstones have been recognizedthroughout history. In ancient times, entire robes wornby royalty were covered with brilliantgemstones. Kings and queens wouldwear precious gems known as thecrown jewels on the posts of theircrowns. The gems were worn not onlybecause they were beautiful and valu-able, but also because they served asantennae to pick up the electromag-netic vibrations from the planets andtransmit them, by means of a conduct-ing metal such as gold, right into thewearers’ heads. The effect of this would

38

39

be to sharpen their minds andbring clarity and insight to theirthinking and decision-makingabilities. The Romans wore coral asa charm against lightning, tempest, shipwreckand fire. It was alsoregarded as a protec-tion against envious per-sons. Coral would warnits wearer of sickness bylosing its color whichwould return whenhealth returned to itswearer. In Rome, the

40

aristocracy would drink from cups makeof rock crystal. When Pompey re-turned to Rome in triumph, thirty-three crowns fashioned chiefly of pearlwere carried aloft in the procession.Ruby was regarded as an antidote forpoison and as a defense against plaguebecause of its blood-purifying properties. The Turks attached amber to thetips of their pipes to prevent infec-tion when smoking. The Greeks be-lieved that to drink wine from an am-ethyst goblet would prevent intoxica-tion. Blue sapphire was considered bythe Greeks to have the power to en-sure chastity in one’s spouse. It was

41

also believed to be a protection againstevil and dark forces and to protect itswearer from captivity. Emerald wasthought to have the power to restoretired or weakened eyesight. It was be-lieved that serpents would be blindedif they looked at an emerald.

PlanetaryBirthstones

44

Birthstone jewelry is currentlyenjoying an amazing increase in popu-larity. Unfortunately, few people knowthat the original birthstone system isrelated to astrology and not merelycalendar months. Vedic or Eastern as-trology, which dates back thousandsof years, explains that each zodiac signis ruled by a specific planet, and eachplanet in turn rules over certain gem-stones. One’s true birthstone there-fore, is determined by the planet thatrules one’s zodiac sign and not the cal-endar month in which one was born.

In addition, in 1912 many of thetraditional gemstones used as birthstones were substituted for more com-mercially viable ones by the AmericanNational Retail Jewelers’ Association.

45

This further diminished the impor-tance of planetary influences associ-ated with birthstones.

Surprisingly your birthstone maynot be what you think it is! Accord-ing to Eastern astrology there is a 23-degree difference from Western astrol-ogy in calculating the position of thestars at the time of birth. This meansthere is also a difference in the corre-sponding dates for each zodiac sign.

While there are several ways of de-termining the birthstone, the mostcommon uses the zodiac or sun sign. The following chart incorporates thismethod, showing the correct dates foreach sign and listing the appropriatebirthstones accepted throughout theEast since ancient times.

In addition to wearing astrologi-cal jewelry, another easy way to attractpositive planetary influences is to wearclothing that incorporates differentshades of the planetary colors. Eachday of the week is associated with aparticular planet and color: Monday –Moon, pearl white; Tuesday – Mars, coral red; Wednesday – Mercury, green;Thursday – Jupiter, yellow; Friday –Venus, white or multicolored; Satur-day – Saturn, blue; and Sunday – Sun,ruby red. Wearing the designated coloron the appropriate day enhances thatplanetary influence. Another optionis to wear colors of the prominent,

51

52

benevolent planets in one’s chart orto wear the colors that correspond toone’s birth sign and birthstone. The Planetary Colors logo is a sim-plified version of the original nine-planet yantra. A yantra is a mysticaldiagram, symbol, or talisman that in-vokes specific powers or energies. Inour logo, we’ve matched the traditionalpositions of each of the planets withtheir corresponding colors. This givesour logo the added benefit of attract-ing the positive and protective influ-ences of all nine planets.
