Vedic astrology is the ancient,universal science of light called“jyotish” in Sanskrit, the original lan-guage of India. The beneficial effects of astrologi-cal gemstones have been recognizedthroughout history. In ancient times, entire robes wornby royalty were covered with brilliantgemstones. Kings and queens wouldwear precious gems known as thecrown jewels on the posts of theircrowns. The Turks attached amber to thetips of their pipes to prevent infec-tion when smoking. The Greeks be-lieved that to drink wine from an am-ethyst goblet would prevent intoxica-tion. Blue sapphire was considered bythe Greeks to have the power to en-sure chastity in one’s spouse. It was

also believed to be a protection againstevil and dark forces and to protect itswearer from captivity. Emerald wasthought to have the power to restoretired or weakened eyesight. It was be-lieved that serpents would be blindedif they looked at an emerald.
