The concept of the rotating bridge was a reaction to three main design constraints:1. The bridge should be 4.5m above the spring high tides in its closed position.2. Nothing was to be built on the Gateshead quayside.3. The deck should have a maximum slope of 1:20 to allow for disabled access.
