Menurut jenisnya aplikasi pengembangangame dapat dibagi menjadi: 2D Game Design
Digunakan untuk membuat game dengan tampilan 2D.
Contoh : Snake, Pacman, Mario Bros, Sonic, Rockman.
3D Game DesignDigunakan untuk membuat game dengan tampilan 3D.
Contoh : Doom, Quake, Counter Strike, Tomb Raider.
Technical & System Game
Yang termasuk dalam jenis ini adalah game dengan teknik atau sistem tertentu untuk memainkan game ini.
Contoh : RPG, RTS, Simulation.
Platform
Perangkat yang dipakai untuk memainkan game ini, dapat terdiri dari PC, Konsol, atau Mobile.
Contoh : Java Game pada HP.
