Research is still being conducted in the same way as it has over the past several centuries.

Even though the Internet was designed with scientists in mind, there has not been a true transformation in the way research is published

• Jetson Carpets Inc. wants to innovate and produce smart carpets using sensor technology.

Use Case: The carpet detects when it needs cleaning and

signals the vacuumrobot to start.

What does Jetson Inc. need?

Traditional knowledge sources.

Open Innovation – Collaborative research.• Usually SMEs have no resources or time to deal with this.• The timing does not match the SMEs operational plans.

• An SME roadmap horizon is typically between 3 to 12 months.

Academic publications:

• are written for other scientists.• take 2 years between writing and publication• .. and are usually behind a payment wall

Conclusion

• Research knowledge dissemination as it is practiced today does not help small businesses.
