Lightweight panel innovation

New material – new connectors

Rafix 20:The Rafix connector, which has beenused millions of times, has beenredesigned in order to to connectlightweight panels without frame in astylish and positively-fitting way.

Tab 20HC:The Tab 20HC combines the advan-tages of the Tab18 shelf connectorwith those of the well-tried Minifix, and is extremely suitable for light-weight panels without frame.

Aerofix 100:This adhesive insert connects bothtop layers by means of the integra-ted adhesive. Suitable for lightweightpanels with a top layer from 4 mm.

This high-tech material is one of the greatest innovations in furni-ture construction.Light weight, high strength and extremely flexible design capabilityare demands that designers make of furniture that has thickpanels but still has to be mobile. As a pioneer in connecting fit-tings for lightweight panels without frame, Häfele is the first com-pany to develop connectors that make it possible to create extre-mely robust, load-bearing structures with this innovative material –and has been presented with innovation awards for it.

Maxifix 35HC:The successful heavy-duty Maxifix connector is ideal asthe basis for making stable connections in multi-sectionworktops in kitchens. The new construction provides anabsolutely flush working surface because of its integratedheight adjusting facility. The drilling pattern corresponds tothe kitchen standard. The advantages are obvious: Thecombination of lightweight panels and the Maxifix 35HCworktop connector cuts down the weight and saves timeand money.

Lightweight panel fittingsHäfele is a pioneer in connecting fittings for lightweight panels without frame, and was one of the first companies to develop connectors that make it possible to create extremely robust, load-bearing structures using this innovative material.Specifically developed lightweight panel fittings and the existing well-known fittings are available to the building trade and industry for furniture construction with lightweight panels.

Structure Characteristics ApplicationLightweight panels consist of three basic elements.• Top layer (top side and bottom side)• Core (e.g. hexagonal honeycomb,

corrugated honeycomb,...)• Frame (optional with or without frame)

Lightweight panels provide excellent properties for use in furniture construction.• Reduced weight• Optimised transportation• Conserves resources• High stability, high load-bearing capacity

and long service life• Large span widths (very little sagging)• Considerable amount of design freedom

Lightweight panels can be used in a wide range of areas in furniture construction and shopfitting. Possible applications are:• Free standing cabinets of all types• Kitchen worktops• Office and conference tables• Shelving systems

Connectors, adhesive insert and screws for lightweight panels

Overview according to application

Different connectors are required for the different structures of lightweight panels.Standard fittings can be used for lightweight panels with frame, for example. However, it must be taken into consideration that these fittings must be fitted in the frame area.

Specifically developed connectors, adhesive inserts and screws are used for lightweight panels without frame.2 solutions have been developed for connecting and attaching to panels with a top layer of 4 mm and above.• Rafix 20 HC and Tab 20 HC, as connectors with variable use.• Varianta special screw, for screwing into the top layer.• The Aerofix 100 adhesive insert bridges the gap (mechanically and chemically)

between the 4 mm top layers. For top layers of 8 mm and above• Standard fittings and Tab 20 HC, as connectors with variable use.• Varianta special screw, for screwing into the top layer.• Chipboard screws and Varianta screws, for screwing into the top layer.

Areas of application

Installation

Häfele developed the Aerofix 100 adhesive insert (also referred to as insert or adhesive dowel) specifically for lightweight panels with a top layer of 4 mm.It is easy to install, and can be processed manually or by automatic machines. The Aerofix 100 adhesive insert is available for panel thicknesses of 25 – 60 mm.

The Aerofix 100 adhesive insert bridges the gap (mechanically and chemically) between the 4 mm top layers of the lightweight panel.

The following can be screwed into the adhesive insert:• 3.5 and 4.0 mm chipboard screws• 3.0 mm Varianta screws• 3.0 mm connecting bolts Cat. No. 263.20.805

• Connectors• Shelf supports• Mounting plates and hinges• Rear panel connectors• Runners• Sliding door fittings• Castors• Table legs and furniture feet• Locking systems• Furniture handles and decorative fittings

Drill 10 mm hole into upper top layer in required position. Use a drilling depth that ensures that the core and its residual adhesive are also removed as far as the lower top layer.

Push Aerofix 100 adhesive insert into drill hole until it mechanically engages. This ensures that screws and bolts can be screwed into the adhesive insert immediately after installation. Please note that the adhesive insert may not be subjected to the full mechanical load immediately after installation.

The chemical adhesion process takes place when the insert is pressed in. The single-component PUR adhesive distributes itself between the upper and lower top layers and is fully cured within 16 hours.Once the adhesive is cured the insert can be subjected to the maximum load.

Installation

Häfele developed the Varianta special screw for lightweight panels with a top layer of 4 mm and above. It can be processed like a chipboard screw and used for all panel thicknesses.

The special thread design of the Varianta special screw provides a firm grip in top layers of 4 mm and above.

Drill 3 mm or 5 mm hole into top layer in required position.

Screw in the Varianta special screw for lightweight panels. The screw can be subjected to maximum load after installation.
