Fuel Cells - the opportunities
Karen Sperrey
Operations Director UPS Systems plc
Our role in this consortium • We are….
• Not Fuel Cell manufacturers • Specialists in Standby Power, equipment, installation and
servicing • Fuel Cell integrators, often asked to assist manufacturers. • Often asked to evaluate products • Actively promoting their commercialisation • Market educators
A fuel cell is…
“a device which generates electricity, heat and water by reacting fuel and air without
burning”.
They were first demonstrated
by Sir William Grove in 1839
Battery or generator?
• Like batteries, fuel cells produce power from a chemical reaction
• Unlike batteries, fuel cells process fuel to provide power
Differing technologies 1. All combine hydrogen and oxygen to
produce electricity, heat and water
2. Many differing technologies & fuel types
3. Some are more advanced than others
4. All have actual or potential niche benefits
The UK Market • Currently in an ‘early adopters’ stage
• High levels of interest in product offering
• Estimates suggest market may be $1bn by 2020
• Erroneously seen as “future technology” currently not available to businesses
• Forecast is of very high potential for FC development
Summary • Wide range of technologies and fuel types • Some technologies available now • Some cost-effective now • Product selection for niche markets is key. • Capital costs falling over time
They appeal to people who… • Are emission sensitive • Have no external space for a generator • Benefit from having the power generation source in the
computer room • Need longer runtimes but don’t have space for large
battery racks • Have strong CSR • Like to be early adopters • Have remote power (off-grid) requirements
UK Fuel Cell Installations Stationary and portable applications for standby and prime power.
Renewable Hydrogen Research and
Demonstration Centre.
“Hybrid” solar and fuel cell system.
Solar generated H2 with storage facility
‘Green’ Hydrogen filing station
Linked to 12KW Fuel Cell to provide power coverage for parts of the centre.
University of Glamorgan
University of Glamorgan
Self-sustainable technology park Hybrid system - 229 KWatt wind turbine, plus 36kW of Fuel Cells and Inverters to provide a 3 Phase/415 Mains Supply. Surplus electricity
Environmental Energy Technology Centre – Rotherham
EETC System Overview
1st AC installation of fuel cell for standby power in the UK in 2005 Supporting IT infrastructure servers and PCs.
12kW FC solution linked to a 3 Phase UPS
Small Office / Datacentre Environment / 25 Users / 24/7 Backup
– Limited space – Planning & environmental issues prevented
installation of diesel generator – Requirement for 24/7 standby power – 40kVA UPS & 36kW fuel cell solution – Sited near the server room – Bespoke hydrogen store created to provide
4hrs run time before cylinders require changing.
London Mews Installation
Application 1: Wind monitoring
Npower renewables Renewable Energy Systems
– Uneconomical access to grid – Continuous remote power required – Low power long run-time – EFOY Units and “cube” containers – Some modular solutions 1,2,3 or 4 units together
Severn Trent Water / Elan Valley reservoir Welsh Water
– Uneconomical / limited access to grid power – Sensitive Environment - pollution and noise free – Reservoir level & telemetry flow monitoring – Low power long run-time needed – Power for security access to reservoir hatches – Fuel Cell monitored by REMO ™
Application 2: Aqueduct, reservoir & telemetry systems
Application 3: Conservation monitoring
Environment Agency
– Eel transfer gate and monitoring system – Remote, reliable & quiet power needed – Uneconomical access to grid – EFOY Pro 2200 and 56 litres of Methanol – 4 months between visits
Other Application Areas: CCTV & Surveillance Movement Sensors Wildlife Photography Meteorology Information LIDAR (Light and Detection and Ranging)
Other Customers: MOD & Home Office (NDA) Mixed units Feasibility studies
Our current role:
• Commercialisation
• Rental/Hire Stock
• Offer market independence
• Installation, integration, servicing and REMO®
• Commercialisation!
