Freewill

GOAL: Authenticity

Authenticity is a person whom takes full responsibly for all their actions – and who they are in life

Authenticity demands a hyperactive sense of awareness –a person desperately trying to figure out what’s going on, all the while, keeping it together to function in society.

It’s as if someone is painting a picture of you and you are adopting that image.

Now say you are painting an image of yourself as well, would that of the painting match the others?

This realization causes a conflict of being that leads to feelings of angst and despair

GOAL: Remove the “Being for

Others”

Determinism

Aristotle often wondered if nature was dependant on the laws of nature. Do we as humans have laws we must follow as well?

If we do have laws of nature to follow does that mean we lack freewill?

Thus, we would have no control over our choices and doomed to a life controlled by a force greater than us. All that remains is a Pseudo-will

Hard Determinists

Hard Determinists believe given our chemical make up, nurture vs. nature, and society influence on knowledge,

we cannot control who we are, thus removing all responsibility.

Bad Faith

Living in Bad Faith means, you believe you have no other choice but assume the role you think you should play.

When we assume we have no freedom to control our lives and succumb to the external circumstances that limit our movement, we are living in Bad Faith.

By acting in bad faith, we deny our choices and remain shackled to the pseudo-world we created.

Bad Faith

“Upon any one of my conducts, it is always possible to convey two looks, mine and that of the Other” Sartre

How “Others” see us influences how we live our lives

Paint a picture of yourself?

Morality

Factors leading to Bad Faith

You may see your life as a series of successes and failures then equate those to your overall being.

What goals have you achieved and what goals did you fail to obtain?

Goals control the mind to the point of absurdity.

When failures define who we are, we succumb to bad faith. We take on the persona of a being without choices and fall victim to Bad Faith.

Goals

Factors leading to Bad Faith

Aristotle maintained the universe is way more powerful than we give her credit.

He spent countless hours in nature recording observations; so much so, he could predict what an animal would do next.

Authenticity

Once you examine your existence in the material world and the spiritual world. You can embrace your freedom

Understanding that the world is free of meaning and has no purpose frees us to create a world of our own making.

To be truly authentic, one must discover total personal awareness while not wilting to the external influences of the world around us.

Task Construct a picture of yourself

Does it match the image of the Other

What factors can you identify in your life that might be unconscious to you

How do we put the power of freewill back in our hands?
