Francesca Woodman
• Francesca Woodman was an American photographer who took self portraits as well as photos of models.
• She was born in Denver, CO to two artist parents
• She graduated from Boulder High School in the 70s.
• She spent many summers in Italy which spurred her interest in art.
• She went to University at RISD
• After she graduated she moved to New York City where she began a summer residency at the McDowel Colony.
• Many of her photographs show young women who are nude, blurred, merging with their surroundings, or whose faces are obscured.
• Many of Woodman’s photographs were taken using a slow shutter speed creating her signature ambiguity.
• Woodman would photograph models that looked very similar to her, because of this a lot of her photographs are mistaken as self portraits.
• Her mother says that many of her photos, although have a very morbid aesthetic, are intended to be humorous.
• All of her photographs have a very ethereal and dark tone to them.
• All of her photos are shot in black and white.
• Woodman's photos were influenced by a variety of factors, including Gothic fiction and Surrealism. She was also influenced by artists Man Ray and Duane Michaels.
• Many of the more than 800 prints produced by Woodman during her lifetime are untitled. Most of her works are known only by date and location
• Due to the failure of her work Woodman became depressed
• In 1980 she survived a suicide attempt and lived in Manhatten with her parents.
• On January 19, 1981 she jumped from the roof a New York City loft and died. She was 22.
• Her work was first introduced to the public at a Wellesley College exhibition in 1986, five years after her suicide
• Woodman created over 10,000 negatives which her parents now keep
