A BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR LADY STAR OF THE SEA CHURCH
Dedicated in 1882, St. Patrick’s Cathedral located on the plot of land on North Carancahua now occupied by the American Bank
Plaza, became the Cathedral of the Diocese of Corpus Christi when the Diocese was formed in 1912. Leading contributors to
the church were Captain Miflin Kenedy, who donated land, money, and pews. Mrs. Kenedy, who donated the sanctuary
windows, and the wife of then Corpus Christi Mayor J. B. Murphy, gave the statues. The ladies of the Altar Society gave the
main altar. Various parishioners, in memory of their deceased family members, donated the other stained glass windows. As
the Diocese grew, a new cathedral was planned and was dedicated in 1940. St. Patrick’s continued to have daily Mass for the
children of Incarnate Word Academy then located nearby. In 1951, after it caught fire, the church was dismantled and the
sanctuary and main part of the nave were moved to the present location to serve the newly created “Our Lady Star of the Sea”
parish. The altar, statues and stained glass windows were saved and reinstalled in the little church. Thus a portion of the old St.
Patrick’s Cathedral remains standing, a memorial to the pioneers of Corpus Christi. Over the years, the parish has grown to
include families from all parts of Corpus Christi, Portland, Gregory, Taft, Aransas Pass and Ingleside who seek a small “country
church” atmosphere of worship and fellowship. In addition, our parishioners represent a broad cross-section of cultures and
backgrounds from various parts of the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Lord, we ask You to bless all who are sick. Give them strength in
body, courage in spirit, and patience in pain. Let them recover
their health that they may joyfully praise your name. Amen
Please be careful when walking in front
of the church. Causeway Blvd. runs
directly in front of the church and blends
with the parking lot. An unsuspecting
parishioner could be walking in front of
the church and not realize that
motorists are driving along the road.

Sunday’s Readings:
Zephaniah 2:3; 3:12-13 “seek justice, seek humility”... Originally “the remnant” comprised those who were so poor that all they had left was their faith in God. But this title was spiritualized to mean those who placed their faith in God first, above any possessions. In every age there is a “remnant” whose only hope is God and whose only treasure is faith.
1 Corinthians 1:26-31 God chose what is weak in the eyes of the world. Paul reminds the Corinthians that they don’t have much to boast about. All they have, in fact, is faith.
Matthew 5:1-12 The beatitudes – a way of true happiness. The “beatitudes” praise those who constitute the faithful “remnant” and promise them a reward for their fidelity. Matthew also connects persecuted Christians with this remnant as a way to offer them hope. Retrieved from: www.churchofepiphany.com
In today’s Gospel, Jesus begins his Sermon on the Mount with a series of blessings, the Beatitudes. The Beatitudes are a summary of the fundamental attitude of a Christian steward. Make it a point to reflect on this Gospel reading during the week. Identify the blessing you relate to the most. Which one is the most challenging for you? Retrieved from: catholicsteward.com
If you need a 2016 Contribution Statement for your tax preparation, call the church office. The statement will be an annual
summary of charitable donations made by check or in an envelope with your name provided on it.
There are lots of volunteer opportunities and every volunteer is greatly appreciated. Look for sign-up sheets to be posted at
the back of the church. To learn about other opportunities to volunteer, attend the meeting on February 13th. We have so
many wonderful volunteers and still need more. It’s a fun and rewarding experience!
Sunday, February 26th Beef BBQ will be served from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. for $8 donation/plate
Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. - BBQ will immediately follow
Flyers are available at the back of the church. Please take one and post it to help get the word out.
Many thanks to everyone who has signed
out and sold raffle tickets. There are more
available at the back of the church. If you
haven’t signed out a packet yet, please
take one and sell the tickets to support the
parish. If you’ve already taken a packet, please consider
signing out more. Our goal is to sell out, and we need
everyone’s help!
Auction items can now be left in the parish
hall following Mass. Please bring items as
soon as possible to allow time to organize
prior to the fundraiser. Food items to be
auctioned may be brought on the day of the fundraiser.
Please call Pam Farley (361-643-2478) if you plan to
bring food items, need to coordinate a time to drop
items off, or have any questions.
Please join the Parish Bible Study Group for a weekly encounter with Jesus in the Scriptures entitled “Signs and
Wonders: Encountering Jesus of Nazareth” every Thursday, 6PM - 7PM, in the Parish Hall. The Bible study sessions,
prepared by Word Among Us Publications, include some of the most dramatic Gospel episodes: the
wedding at Cana, Jesus walking on water, and the raising of the little girl who had died. The group
reflection sharings allow participants to come to a deeper understanding of Jesus—and why we choose to follow him.
All parishioners are invited to attend a meeting February 13th at 7:00 p.m. in the parish hall
to discuss the annual fundraiser. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend.
