What is formative assessment?

An Official Definition

Formative assessment is a process used by

teachers and students during instruction that

provides feedback to adjust ongoing

teaching and learning to improve students'

achievement of intended instructional

outcomes.

ascd.org 2015

As you are probably thinking

We already do many activities that have great

formative assessment potential

Stop and Jot

Turn and Talk

Think Write Pair Share

Communicator Boards

Four Corners

Exit Slips

… and more!

The key is what you do after

the activity is complete

For the assessment to be

FORMATIVE, you must use the

results to guide instruction.

Don’t Panic

• There are MANY great websites and apps that can

help with formative assessment, but you can still

use other strategies, non-tech strategies.

• We will have designated “Tech Coach Days” for

those prefer to set up and try a strategy with

support.

Let’s Create Some Goals

• Using the resource hand out you have received,

choose one technology based strategy to try and

one non-tech strategy to try.

• You can decide and plan as a group or individually.

• You should try something new, something you

haven’t done before!

For next session

• Please bring some evidence of using ONE

of your new strategies.

– print out of results,

– reflection by students of how they felt about

strategy (video or written)

– Actual student work

– Your reflection on how it worked
