GALLUP,N.M.–CouncilDelegateAmberKanazbahCrotty(Beclabito,Cove,GadÍí’áhí/Tókǫ’í,RedValley,ToohHaltsooí,Toadlena/TwoGreyHills,TséAłnáozt’i’í)attendedtheCommunityOutreachandPatientEmpowermentprogram’syouthretreatinGalluponApril9.

Thetwo-dayeventwascoordinatedaspartofCOPE’sNavajoCommunityHealthOutreachYouthLeadershipProgram,headedbyformerNavajoNationVicePresidentRexLeeJim.Theprogramiscomprisedofseveralpublichealthprofessionals,whoprovidedtraininginseveraldifferentdisciplinestotheyouthparticipants.

TheNCHOYouthLeadershipProgramempowersyouthtopracticehealthylifestylesalongwiththeirpeers,families,andcommunitiesandalsoinvolvesNavajohighschoolstudentsinactivitiestoincreaseyouthfoodliteracy.

“AsamotherandaNaat’áanii,Itrulybelieveinempoweringourchildrenwiththeabilitytoidentifyandsolvecommunitychallenges.”DelegateCrottystated.“Irememberhowmymotherandgrandmother’swordshelpedshapemeasayoungperson.WecandevelopourNavajoyouthtoovercomethesystemicobstaclestheyfaceinsocietyandeducationalsystems,toensureourNation’sfuture.”

DelegateCrottysaidherpresenceattheeventwaspartofheroveralladvocacyandnation-buildinggoaltosupportyouthleadershipandpushforrealprogressforNavajofamilies.

“EventssuchastheseprovidetheopportunitytointeractwithourNavajoyouthandheardirectlyfromthemonpolicyrecommendationswhileencouragingahealthy,positivelifestyleinharmonywithourteachingof‘hózhǫ́,”saidDelegateCrotty,addingthatsheispleasedtoseehealthpartnershipsworkingtogethertopromoteahealthyNavajoNation.
