What would happen if my friend eats a food they are allergic to?

Your friend could get very sick right away after eating a tiny bit of a food he or she is allergic to

He or she would need his or her medicine very quickly and to go to the hospital

One or more may occur within minutes to a few hours after ingestion

Symptoms

Anaphylaxis

A very serious allergic reaction that happens very quickly and can cause death

Causes include foods, insect stings, latex, & medications

Individuals with food allergy plus asthma are at greatest risk for a life-threatening reaction

Administering the epinephrine (adrenaline) is key to surviving anaphylaxis.

Prescribed as Epi-Pen or Twinject auto-injectors

What is it? How to treat it.

How can I help a friend who has food allergies?

What does it mean to be a PAL? Food allergies are serious. Don’t make

jokes about them Don’t share food with friends who have

food allergies Wash your hands after eating Ask what your friend is allergic to and

help them avoid it Get help immediately if a friend with

food allergies becomes ill!

What would you do?

Your friend, Jake, has a food allergy. As you and Jake walk out of the

cafeteria, he says his stomach hurts. You ask him to play with you at recess,

but he says he wants to lie down He says it feels like there is something

stuck in his throat.

A PAL would…

Get an adult right away! Tell the adult you think Jake might be

having an allergic reaction.

What would you do?

You and Jake are at a birthday party. Emily offers Jake a piece of cake. Jake says “no thank you, I have food

allergies.” Emily says, “Come on and have some,

it’s probably OK.”

A PAL would…

Tell Emily that even one bite of the wrong food could make Jake sick.

Ask Jake if there is something else he can eat.

What would you do?

Two kids in your class are allergic to milk and peanuts.

Before school, you ate peanut butter toast and drank a glass of milk.

A PAL would…
