Homework: Find 2-3 poems online, by a published author and bring in copies of them. No Shel Silverstein, no Dr. Seuss, no limericks, no haiku! Unit 4 vocabulary quiz next Tuesday, March 4th. Poetry test on Wednesday, March 5th!

Objective: I can identify the elements of plot in a narrative poem.

Warm Up (in your composition book)Look up the definition for NARRATIVE POETRY in the red section of your Lit. book. Copy the definition into your notes. Draw a plot diagram in your notes. Label and describe each part of it.

Poetry tells a story. It has characters, a setting and a plot.

Turn in your Literature book to pg. 142

Let's read the section titled "Have You Ever Been Fooled?"

The Walrus and the Carpenter is an example of a narrative poem. This means that it must have all the elements of a story, including...

Give 4 setting details mentioned in the poem’s exposition. setting = time, placeexposition = introduction of characters and setting

What is the central conflict in the poem? conflict = the problem in a story

List 3 events (in sequential order) that are part of the poem's rising action.  sequential order - the order that events occur inrising action - suspense builds, conflict is getting more intense   

In which lines is the climax, or turning point of the poem, found?

What is the climax of the poem?

Give an example of an event that is part of the falling action.falling action - events that lead to the resolution, the story winds

down

What is the resolution to the conflict? resolution = resolves the central conflict

Identify 4 characters in the poem and give an adjective that describes each. Be sure you can justify your adjectives with textual evidence!  characters = people or animals in a story
