DESCRIPTION

I gave this PechaKucha like presentation on my experience traveling the Trans-Siverian railroad during the summer of 2013, as part of the North Quad Exposure Series. The series is intended for members of the University, Ann Arbor, and Detroit community to present and discuss on a wide range of interdisciplinary topics. What was intended to be a 6 minute 40 second presentation turned into a 35 minute talk due to technical complications. However, even after 35 minutes I still had stories to tell relating back to our rules of travel.

Sara, Jackie, & Nicole’s Rules for Travel

Which one is Sara and which one is the statue?

The Players: NicoleOur Token Classy Lady

Delicate flower at the Pushkin Museum.

Inspecting our dinner at the store in Moscow.

Rule #3: Wandering around St. Petersburg wearing a home-made eye patch. Thank

goodness Dr. Sara was there.

The mosquitos are vicious; I deeted everything EXCEPT for my eyelids. Lesson learned.

Rule #3: It’s okay to look silly in the rain as long as you’re not alone.

Miserable rain at the Kremlin, but we’re fine with our crazy scarfs.

Rule #3 Don’t be preoccupied with looking cool in your travel pictures

Rule #4 Culinary Adventure is out there!

Rule #4: Try as many weird flavored chips as possible (you never know what’s

going to be BBQ).

Rule #4 Culinary Adventures in Mongolia

Khushur: Fried mutton filled pancake served at Nadaam

Hot fermented mare’s milk vodka (distilled in the family’s Ger)

Rule #4 China: If they tell you it feeds a “great many people” believe them

This is a before and an after shot, we were disappointed in ourselves.

Rule #4: Be willing to experiment with your transportation

Whether by camel across the Steppe in Mongolia, or water buffalo in China.

Things We Learned on the Trip

• Don’t be afraid to stray from the common path

• Take advantage of opportunities as they’re presented to you

• Don’t be afraid to let go of preconceived notions you have about

where you’re traveling.

When you’ve got time to kill before catching your bus, think about sharing

your pastry with Lenin

Take some time out to witness a World Record

Russians are Badasses

Tanya Savicheva “Russian Anne Frank”One ration’s worth of bread 125g only ½ flour other ½ filler

Siege of Leningrad 872 days September 8, 1941-January 27, 1944

Badasses Part IILeonid Rogozov, a doctor, had to perform an appendectomy on himself while stationed in the Antarctic.

This is why you don’t get involved in a land war in Russia.

Lessons I Learned:I have the best traveling companions, ever.

We spent 5 days in this tiny compartment.

This was my shopping list when I had food poisoning, notice how I crossed off Excellent Minions because I already had them.

With the right people everyday is an adventure
