About ETD-db

Web (html) pages and Perl scripts that interact with a MySQL database

Used by researchers, ETD authors, graduate school personnel, and library personnel to enter and manage files and metadata metadata and attach their ETDs

Developed at Virginia Tech Digital Library and Archives (authored, maintains)

Graduate School

NDLTD: Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations

Is available FREE of charge to members of NDLTD.

ETD-db Workflow: Student Authors

Login Enter details (metadata) such as name, title

of the ETD, degree, department, committee members, keywords, abstract, copyright statement, etc.

Set access level for the ETD – Worldwide access– Restricted access (host university-only)– Embargoed access (inaccessible to everybody)

ETD-db Workflow: Graduate School

Submitted ETD is stored in ETD-db on library server

Graduate School personnel login– Access list of submitted ETDs

• Can email and maintain record of communication with student authors

– Approve ETDs

ETD-db Workflow: Graduate School

Approving an ETD automatically generates– Emails

• Congratulations to author and committee

• Notifies UMI/ProQuest

– List of ETDs to be cataloged– Access

• Public

• University-only

– Inaccessible: Embargoed/Withheld ETDs

ETD-db Workflow: Library

Hosts ETD-DB Hosts ETD server

– Provides access

– Maintains embargoed/hidden ETDs

Separate from ETD-db– Catalogs ETDs

– Systematic data backups

– Preservation through NDLTD/MetaArchive collaboration
