Special dedication

AcknowledgementAcknowledgementI would like to express my gratitude to all those who gave me the possibility to complete this thesis. I want to thank the department of GHANSHYAMDAS SARAF GIRLS COLLEGE for giving us permission to commence this thesis in the first instance. I have furthermore to thank the ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PROF.VISHAKHA RUNGTA who gave and confirmed this permission and encouraged us to go ahead with our thesis. I am bound to the honorable co-members of my group for their stimulating support, suggestions and encouragement which helped me in all the time of research and for writing of this thesis. I am deeply indebted to all my former colleagues for looking closely at the final version of the thesis for English style and grammar, correcting both and offering suggestions for improvement. And finally, i would like to thank every one of you for giving me a chance to present this project to your honorable personalities`

INTRODUCTIONINTRODUCTIONThe landmark report of the World

Commission on Environment and Development, entitled "Our Common Future", warned that unless we change many of our lifestyle patterns, the world will face unacceptable levels of environmental damage and human suffering. The Commission, echoing the urgent need for tailoring the pace and the pattern of global economic growth to the planet's carrying capacity, said that: "Humanity has the ability to make development sustainable and to ensure that it meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

Meaning Meaning Environmental degradation is

the deterioration in environmental quality from ambient concentrations of pollutants and other activities and processes such as improper land use and natural disasters.

Erosion of the quality of natural environment caused, directly or indirectly, by human activities.

The Underlying Causes ofEnvironmental DegradationEnvironmental degradation is a result ofthe dynamic inter play of socio-economic,institutional and technological activities.Environmental changes may be driven by

manyfactors including economic growth, populationgrowth, urbanization, intensification ofagriculture, rising energy use and

transportation.Poverty still remains a problem at the root ofseveral environmental problems.

Social factor

PopulationPovertyUrbanization

Social factor

Population India supports 17 per cent of the world population on just 2.4 per

cent of world land area. It’s current rate of population growth at 1.85 per cent continues to pose a persistent population challenge. In view of the linkages between population and environment, a vigorous

drive for population control need hardly be over emphasized. Poverty Poverty is said to be both cause and effect of environmental

degradation. The circular link between poverty and environment is an extremely complex phenomenon. Inequality may foster unsustainability because the poor, who rely on natural resources more than the rich, deplete natural resources faster as they have no real prospects of gaining access to other types of resources.

Urbanization During the past two decades of 1971-91, India’s urban population

has doubled from 109 million to 218 million and is estimated to reach 300 million by 2000 AD

Lack of awareness and infrastructure makes implementation of most of the laws relating to environment, extremely difficult and ineffective.

INSTITUTIONAL FACTOR

Global warming is defined as the increase of the average temperature on earth. As the earth is getting hotter, disaster like hurricanes, draughts and floods are getting mare frequent.

Acid rain

The term acid rain refers to what scientists call acid deposition.  It is caused by airborne acidic pollutants and has highly destructive results.

Scientists first discovered acid rain in 1852, when the English chemist Robert Agnus invented the term.  From then until now, acid rain has been an issue of intense debate among scientists and policy makers.

Acid rain, one of the most important environmental problems of all, cannot be seen.  The invisible gases that cause acid rain usually come from automobiles or coal-burning power plants.

Acid rain moves easily, affecting locations far beyond those that let out the pollution.  As a result, this global pollution issue causes great debates between countries that fight over polluting each other's environments.

For years, science studied the true causes of acid rain.  Some scientists concluded that human production was primarily responsible, while others cited natural causes as well.  Recently, more intensive research has been done so that countries have the information they need to prevent acid rain and its dangerous effects.

The levels of acid rain vary from region to region.  In Third World nations without pollution restrictions, acid rain tends to be very high.  In Eastern Europe, China, and the Soviet Union, acid rain levels have also risen greatly.  However, because acid rain can move about so easily, the problem is definitely a global one.

PREVENTIONPREVENTIONToday's society becomes ever more rapidly vulnerable to natural disasters due to the concentrationof populations in mega-cities. Additionally, changes in the global environmentthreaten us with the possibility of severe typhoons, rising sea levels, droughts, among others.Considering these rapid changes of ambient conditions, vulnerability has increased due togrowing urban populations, environmental degradation, and a lack of planning, land managementand preparedness. Environmental disasters in many cases are effected by humanusage of natural resources. They take place especially because of the negative impact of theover-exploitation of natural resources. Spatial planning and land management provide varioustools to prevent natural hazards. The prevention of catastrophes in general is a considerationof spatial planning and land management on the regional and local level
